It's not the company, it's the attitude. I have personally seen how "calling down the road" has made life very difficult for many of my friends. Central Dispatch does not react well to disrespectful drivers, and that goes for management in general. Ones who whine and complain about everything especially issues that do not affect them, like the old "calling for a friend" stuff is bad business. My leadership knows if I call or sit down in front of them something is wrong and I have their undivided attention. I may not like the answer I get but I have an answer, I do not waste my breath running down the company if I see an issue. I have seen tremendous success in this practice and I have given this advice to so many newbies along the way. Make fun, call me a company man, a suck up but at the end of the day I answer to God about how I do my job and how I represent Jesus Christ, he is the only one I live for the approval of. Life is too long to be miserable, so many have left Averitt and have found extreme happiness at other companies. Trucking jobs are everywhere and with Averitt on your resume you can land a very nice job. So we all have a choice, be miserable and make others miserable and take every dispatch personal or throw your name out to the hiring trucking world and wait for the offers to come flooding in.
I respectfully disagree, I am the first to admit I know nothing of the TL world. I have done everything here but that. But attitude means everything and it has never been easier for TL to transfer to the gravy train Shuttle world. Knx had three TL driver switch to Shuttle last year, a mid 20yr., a 13 yr and a 10 yr. man. I have never met a happy driver who is a rearend to management thinking they will get their way by being a jerk, they always seem to have a paranoid persona thinking everyone is trying to screw them simply because that is how they treat others.
Well truthfully I don't want to be the whiney guy. I'll take it as I go. I also don't want to switch jobs any time soon either like I said I hate changing jobs. I've been chasing better money for a while working oil field and refinery jobs which is very good money but make your resume 3 pages long and doesn't really look good. I just hope I can really get the hang of this job so I can be happy here like many others.
Hang in there , I have seen my share of bumps in the road but get a few years under your belt and you will be glad you hung around. This place is like family to me.
I don't think asking to have to be home a bit more with my kids vs getting stuck out for a weekend sitting somewhere and wishing I was home with the kids would be considered whining. I understand Iceman has different ways of handling issues at work but he also admits that he hasn't ran the road and been gone for a week or more at a time week after week. Few people understand what it's like to not be able to make weekend plans (which you can't in truckload) or to be excited on Thursday and Friday about heading home only to have a load change come up Friday afternoon taking you the opposite way. Personally, my family is why I work, they take priority over any job. No one ever mentioned being a jerk, or being an ass but if it's not working out the way you were told, the way you expected, there are avenues to take and politely take it to the next level. Saying nothing is often acceptance that you are ok with things, if you want a change you have to speak up no one is a mind reader. Good luck
Yeah I understand I need to speak up in a certain way. This week looks good so far as I'm headed down now and also last week which I didn't make it is time due to traffic. I guess it helped me bringing it up.
You have to realize that like many other trucking outfits they will promise you the moon and lie through their teeth.

That's true,that's why I'm choosing to stick around. It has gotten better tho. But still trying to find the medium
I wish you luck. There is petrified wood in that corp. office. Things will NEVER change for the better until that wood is gone.
Remember around 2000 they started that forward looking collision avoidance radar...what a load of crap...damn thing when off on almost every overpass you went under...I knew many drivers that keep a spare blown fuse to put in after the shop would replace it...now they have lane adjusting radar or what ever it is to remind you to KEEP IN THE CENTER OF THE LANE...Google self driving trucks should be right around the corner...

Well just a little follow up. Things are getting worse as far as getting home on time. I'm at customer right now and been here for 6 hours so far. I tell dispatch it will be hard to get my next load on time,since it delivers Saturday. Well his response it can be delivered any time tomorrow. Well yeah so I get home tomorrow afternoon and hop back in my truck Sunday while he gets his days off. I'm giving this a couple more months and I'm back to hauling frac sand over the summer. This company does not care if you have a family that you don't see all week. Yeah I've been getting home Saturday around noonoon so not too happy

Get out and don't waste another minute. Every time I see one of the poor saps that still work for this screwed up company driving their no-power tucks down the road wearing their ugly red shirts I tell myself how damn lucky I was to get away from it.
I actually like the company,it's just the way it's being run. It does have lot to offer that other companies don't.but right now im stuck in Dallas trying to reset tonight so I can get my load at 10:30. I don't have the hours to drop and then dead head home,so I have to reset because even after doing a split break I won't have the hours. At least in the oil field i know the schedule 14/5 which is what I was used to. Maybe that's why this 1 day off is so hard to get used to.
