Obama seeks $10-per-barrel oil tax to fund clean transport

https://www.washingtonpost.com/busi...5f05ac-cb80-11e5-b9ab-26591104bb19_story.html

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama wants oil companies to pay a $10 fee for every barrel of oil to help fund investments in clean transportation that fight climate change.

:scratchhead:Bad idea. Stupid bad, in so many ways, IMHO.

Note: If this were to be be approved, YOU would be the one paying for it, NOT the "oil companies".

Bill seeks to rein in states’ ability to regulate hours-of-service, driver pay

"The language in the FAA bill, like the Denham amendment, would prohibit states from requiring truckers to comply with state-enacted hours regulations, such as California’s meal and rest breaks. It also would exempt carriers from state-enforced penalties for not allowing drivers to take state-required breaks. States would also be restricted from requiring carriers, as employers, to pay truck driver employees “separate or additional compensation,” such as detention pay."

Trucker rest break proposal resurrected in aviation bill

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/ba46...rest-break-proposal-resurrected-aviation-bill

"It's really about money, according to James Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The trucking industry wants drivers to be behind the wheel as much as possible for the time they're being paid, Hoffa said in a statement. In addition to rest breaks, the provision would also limit how truck drivers are paid, and not compensate them for safety procedures like performing pre-trip inspections, he said.

"It overrules the fundamental principle that all workers should be paid for the time they work," he said."

John Doe was making a right turn when a sports car hidden from view behind him drove onto the intersection’s grassy corner to try and head him off, only to slam into Doe’s trailer. Was this a preventable accident?

That's a tough one because the car broke law. I would say no.

Yep. Don't anyone think for a second that this wouldn't be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices for petroleum products. It's an artificial increase to the price of oil, and in all honesty, supports a concept that simply doesn't work.

" Fighting" climate change is an impossible goal. Reducing our role in it (about 3%, compared to methane gas from livestock and, even larger, volcanoes) is a monumentally expensive task. Clean air isn't enough anymore, they want to fight a natural cycle. Notice how nobody is talking about the hole in the ozone layer anymore? That's because it's shrinking.

It'll never be enough for these lunatics, imo. Here in Canada, a few provinces are talking about "High Occupancy Toll" or HOT lanes on our highways. The supposed concept is to reduce congestion by giving a financial incentive to carpool, while leaving an option to simply pay a toll to use the carpool lane. Even the people who voted for these liberal governments are complaining about this monumental cash grab, saying that it'll ensure that only rich people can use them and that carpooling is dangerous.

It's all about the money, folks. Give the government more of your money, they're sure to spend it on what they say they will!

Just don't expect it done right the first time, when it's finally done at all!

Guy in the car was breaking the law, period. And if anyone says the driver should've seen him (you know someone would try) they don't understand that the right mirror can't see anything when turning right.

This is how people get run over. They stand in the blind spot on a street corner, not paying attention, and get creamed by the trailer tires. It's even happened with articulating busses! And the driver is almost always blamed because the tires shouldn't hop the curb. Easy to say when you're not the one making that wide right and coming face to face with a car in the left turn lane who stopped at the crosswalk instead of the line.

Since the truck market is going through a difficult period, Stadler says acquisitions “would be cheaper,” and Paccar and Navistar were clearly still viable targets. “If Volkswagen wants to gain some market share in the U.S., these are two which might be for sale,”

America has near record 5.6 million job openings

http://money.cnn.com/2016/02/09/news/economy/america-5-6-million-record-job-openings/?iid=TL_Popular

"During the recession, employers had their pick of employees: there were few job openings and lots of available workers. They could raise the bar and demand more qualifications for employees.

The tables have mostly turned now: there's plenty of jobs but a shrinking number of workers. Unemployment fell to 4.9% in January, the lowest rate in 8 years. Many economists consider such a low rate to be "full employment..."

Because there's a smaller pool of workers for employers to choose from, employers are forced to raise wages to help retain their employees.

...America lost 11,000 apprenticeship programs between 2002 and last year, according to Labor Department figures. There were just under 21,000 programs in the country last year. Those who run apprenticeship programs cite the declining influence of labor unions -- a major supporter of apprenticeships -- as one reason why programs have shut down."

"The chance for 99-cent fuel is possible during the next few weeks before the summer driving season begins, Michael Green, a spokesman in Washington for AAA, said in a phone interview. “We may have some stations offering gas below $1 per gallon for marketing purposes, but the chances of a station offering under $1 are going to decrease pretty soon.”"

The so-called truck toll bill will help to fund repairs for the state's declining roads and bridges by putting up 14 gantries to toll semi-trucks throughout Rhode Island. Once up and running those tolls are expected to bring in around $45 million a year.

House committee clears bill that exempt carriers from complying with state laws on driver pay, breaks

- See more at: http://www.ccjdigital.com/house-com...466b2c5785e539d1cda3c973#sthash.Hjt8zPmP.dpuf

"The trucking-relevant clauses would: (1) Block states from requiring drivers to take meal and rest breaks, if such a law is on the books at the state level, (2) exempt carriers from penalties for not requiring drivers to take state-law-required breaks and (3) Allow carriers, as employers, to skirt any state laws requiring drivers be paid “separate or additional compensation” beyond mileage or other base pay."
