ODFL | What do you Love about working here? What do you Hate about working here?

Some things I love to hate:

Empties on the yard that get kicked back on Blu because they aren't empty in the system.

Waiting excessive amounts of time to answer phone.

Not being set up on something and having to call from a hotel.

Calling you 12 hours into a 34 hour reset.

Breaking down sets while yard jockeys are goofing off.

Miniature terminals.

Being ignored at dispatch window while they tell non-work related stories.

Having a monthly safety meeting yet some terminals have dollies in unsafe/un-flat places.

Old directions or wrong directions on the Blu.

Stapled haz-mat papers enclosed in envelope.

Most terminals don't message you to tell you where to drop trailers, so you have to walk in and find someone to ask. This type of nonsense eats up on duty time.

Having non adequate or non-existent tools to clean windows at most terminals.

Doing the yard speed limit and getting passed or tail-gated.

Slippery fuel lanes from diesel spills.
 
I agree mostly. As far as where to drop the trailers, we usually call the SC and ask, if we're going to a place we've never been to before.

I heard that they don't pay overtime is that true or not?
 
Hate the pallet racks on the dock.It creates an aisle and then a pinch point at each end.Forks coming around the corner.Its crunch time at 930 in the morning.Keep your head on a swivel.Then the freight gets pushed against the bar.Or freight staged on the end STILL gets hammered being partially in the lane.

OD has done a lot of good things but sometimes you just scratch your head over an idea.
 
Why do they even have any pallet racks? It's been at least four or five years since OD got rid of the last pup not equipped with integral rack system. Haven't seen any of them at my barn in at least that long. I once had asked if I could buy one to put in my garage to save floor space,was told they'd all been scrapped.

I wasn't talking about the pallet decks that go in the trailer.I'm talking about permanent shelving racks to store freight.Was meant for weird stuff like odd size stuff residential etc.Less rehandling meant less damage.But then they put a big shipment on one side of the aisle.Like a big 4,5,6 pallet shot of hospital or grocery stuff (which also risks damage) then the bottle neck is that much worse.

We still use the pallet racks flipped upside down for tires and rolls of junk freight to move across the dock. Always love it when a dumb dock worker flips it and deafens anyone within hearing distance.
 
If the racks on the dock are used properly, they are a tremendous asset. You can double or triple your capacity for docking freight vs simply using just floor space. They make a heck of a lot more sense that spending additional millions for more brick and mortar...... But, as any tool, they must be used as intended!!

I thought he was talking about those table racks that show up in trailers .
 
Really getting frustrated with the tractor situation in SAC.A bunch of us start at 9.Not enough trucks.Or line drivers still not quite there yet.Dispatch if you have a truck.Did you check with shop? They get mad.The other day the shop mgs got a little annoyed with me too.Its like why is it my fault.

Or else it's a free for all the trucks that are there.Every man for himself.And now sometimes they'll give away a line driver's truck if they need it knowing he will need one when he comes to work.

And I'm not even talking about clean vs dirty trucks either.

Don't get me wrong, this company has a lot of good things to offer but, where I work it's not to peachy. Hasn't been since I started here 15 months ago. Already on the second manager and there's trouble brewing for this one. Can't help but hope this is the exception not the rule for OD.

I'm not sure where you are, but I've worked at 3 OD service centers over 10 years and this is diffinately the exception. I'm not saying everything is perfect, but this is a good company with a lot of good people who work here. Is it a management problem, or are the hourlys causing problems?
