Sure...hauling junk freight does increase tonnage. But there is no money in it. Look at the crap that Grainger and HD give us. Mop heads and a couple of boxes of ceiling tiles to houses and out of the way businesses. Discipline revenue management? Sadly you need management that knows what freight to haul. UPS has owned this company for over 10yrs and they still can't figure out what they are doing. FedEx priority freight has grown by over 10 percent this quarter. OD is growing and expanding which has moved them to number 4 in size and us to number 5. We seem to be going in reverse. But hey...tonnage is up!
I was at CMS ( Columbus Ohio ) today and counted 14 owner ops waiting for freight. Local drivers told me 44 runs have been canceled in the last 2 years. ( right after contract was forced on the membership ). The number of extra board drivers cut in half. The other half are now adhoc. I'm sure UPS upper management is still thanking Hoffa and Hall while owner ops run the freight and dues paying drivers sit on the couch.
