SAIA | DriveCam ... By Lytx

I guess my question was a little vague? I can't think of anything happening inside the tractor, that could cause the inward camera and microphone to activate. That just leaves an outside event triggering the forward looking camera, which also must activate a video and audio download from the inward facing camera, otherwise, what is the point of the inward facing camera? So, two videos, one forward and one inward plus audio , is downloaded anytime the forward camera is tripped?

When an event is triggered both camaras go off simultaneously. If your drifting lanes they can see what distracted you or if something didn't distract you. Same with hard brakes or turns. It may be something out of your control in which your ass is covered. But if you were reaching for something such as a phone or perhaps a drink or food that's not good and will probably get you a coaching session. Just stay focused and keep it between the lines. Use the Smith System and aim high in steering and get the big picture to prevent hard braking. Avoid sharp turns because they will get you. Things like hard hooks and potholes are no big deal. They will set them off too. It doesn't take much to set them off. That's why it's best to stay focused. Some things are just unavoidable like a deer running out in front of you. Common sense says hit the deer and don't jerk the wheel. Of course every situation is different and how you handle it as a professional truck driver will determine your future at SAIA LTL FREIGHT.

It is downloaded to Lytex who then reviews it and decides to forward it or not.
It does go to LYTX first but they send any event to SAIA for review, the safety department I might add. SAIA determines what's important not LYTX. SAIA pays them to send any event. They do not pay them to screen the process. Other than if perhaps the event is muddled or a technical issue prevents the event from being useful.

There is a criteria that is determined by the customer, it is the Lytx interpretation of the event that determines if it get sent or not. Not all events require a safety maggot to review them, bumping a dock or hitting a pothole for example.

That's not my understanding. Bumping docks too hard and potholes are issues that need addressing especially at company facilities. If a driver is constantly slamming docks it will be addressed. It happens to me but not very often. If it happens every single day and every single time I believe you have a problem.
 
Believe it or not some drivers find it funny to set the camera off by intentionally hitting a pothole and bumping docks too hard. Of course until something is said to them about it. Sometimes it's unavoidable and sometimes it isn't.

Company supplied cars are not covered by Saia liability insurance? Employees, who drive these "non" commercial cars, are exempt from Safety department scrutiny? How nice.
I don't make those decisions. Maybe they will put them in company cars in time. I'm sure safety will take a look at it if the company cars start to have a lot of accidents. It's all about risk assessment I suppose. Either way it's not my job to question safety. My job is to drive a truck and do it in a safe manner.

Joe is right. It goes to lytx first, reviewed by them, and according to the contract you have and the criteria set out, they decide whether or not to send it to your safety dept. no way every event gets sent. It would be hundreds daily. Plus, you pay extra for events to get sent to you for review.
 
This is the best move for safety that this company has ever made. I know many hate DriveCam but if you will give it a chance you will understand it's here to protect you. So many drivers are so arrogant that they think they can do no wrong. That they are perfect and never make mistakes. This is a tool to help you become a safer driver as well as to protect you when your in the right. We are never to old to learn. I've done this 43 years and welcome it. I should have been more specific. I didn't mean to imply every event was sent to SAIA.
My company is going to the same garbage. I can't wait to get coaching sessions daily about my terrible city driving. The vast majority of my stops require going outside the lines to enter and exit their property. I guess the 3rd party will sort through what needs safety attn. you can spin this as a good thing all you want, but it's only good for the driver in the event of an accident in order to prove his innocence. Unless driver is guilty of distracted driving and then he's jobless and probably in a lawsuit with some ambulance chaser. I'm going to make our safety guy call every day to find out why I crossed the yellow line 100 times the day before. It's not about the change either train; it's about respect. These cameras are a physical symbol that my company doesn't believe I'm capable of doing my job without a nanny
 
Based on what I'm reading on this post, one question I do have is if the company will make certain concessions on job performance due to the reduced productivity that the on board cameras will no doubt cause? When I ran city, I had to do all kinds of crazy stuff in order to get in and out of customer locations. If the alarm was going off every single time I did that, I'm guessing the company would, what? Coach me to act in a way that doesn't make the alarm trip. Maybe going around the block, and maybe several times in fact. Backtracking, missing stops. I don't know. But for all you guys' sake, I hope they have throughly thought this out. B

You work for a great company. Southeastern is just one more company that's moving to this technology. Everyone will have them soon. And the ones that don't will find themselves left in the dust.

It's better to lose a little productivity than to lose millions in lawsuits. This technology will save companies millions in frivolous lawsuits. I'm certain they have thought it through and have determined it's worth it.
 
Everyone I have talked to that has driven these things tell me they are super sensitive they get triggered by potholes rough bridges hitting docks etc. I know for a fact these things have a sensitivity setting I own a very high quality dash cam myself all of them have these settings so why won't they just go in and back it off a little. I would be fine with it if it worked like they told us in the meeting and I'll quote what was told to me by one of the top 5 people at saia "they are triggered by the same events the bendix cameras are" that's what he said and I'll swear on a bible to it.then he drove out of the parking lot in his company car with his phone up to his ear but that's beside the point lol. But if this thing is triggered every time you hit a rough spot in the road it will film for over half of my run time.

And not a thing will be said about it. It will be reviewed and dismissed unless your on the phone of course. These cameras are no big deal once you get use to them. The phone is the biggest issue with the seasoned veterans. Most drive safely and defensive anyway so it really doesn't affect them. But it is a pain in the ass not being able to answer the phone at times with my Bluetooth and the frustration is because its technically not illegal. It's just the company policy that says no Bluetooth. I don't have to like this policy but I do have to follow it. I just wish they would change it.
