How is dot foods to work for as a driver?

Thanks for the heads-up GT.

Dot is a good company to work for. Granted, there are always things that will make you scratch your head or kick the dog but not as much as with any other company I worked for in the past.

The good:
Home every week
Round-trip dispatch
Average driver salary is around $65,000 a year
Assigned trucks
There isn't much you do on the truck that isn't compensated (detention pay, layover pay, chain-up pay, drop and hook pay, etc.)
Good benefits (health, dental, vision, life, long and short-term disability)
You generally aren't treated like a barely-functioning society reject.
Killer parties (we had Montgomery Gentry play for our Christmas party this year)

The not-so-good:
All trucks are automatics
You have to live within 100 miles of a DC because we don't take our trucks home
No pets in the trucks
We still have dispatchers :)

Unless you're on a dedicated run you'll generally be home on the weekend. We're busy enough and need drivers so most of the time it's only for your 34 hour restart but you'll also GENERALLY get home a day or two during the week as well. I've been with Dot for over five years and I've done exactly one 34 hour restart on the road, and that was a volunteer trip. In cases like that, Dot will give you the choice of taking the layover pay or they'll pay for a hotel room for you.

Do you have to run out of Joilet to pull doubles? I live in the Mt. Sterling area and may be looking for a new gig before too long. DOT will be my first choice if I have to leave where I am now. How long does it take to get a dedicated on the average? Is the pay consistant? I deliver out there quite a bit and they seem to be decent people to deal with. Any other insight would be helpful. Thanks

Yes, we only pull doubles out of Joliet. The spots are all full and there hasn't been an increase in runs in a couple years.
