I have heard some rumors that the South Bend Indiana (127) terminal is next in line for relocation. I would have to say that I hope this is true. The yard space, along with the volume of drivers/freight that passes through during the midnight shift with the hub/crossdock operation? The terminal is extremely undersized for this volume of traffic. Not to mention the condition of the yard, and complete lack of space.
There is one jockey on 3rd shift, and although he is very skilled and efficient-- he can't keep up with all of the issues that arise because of the lack of space.

Just wondering if anyone else has heard this rumor, and if there is any validity.

If you worked in the South Bend yard as a jockey, and had to deal with these obstacles on a daily basis--- I would say your complaint is valid. South Bend NEEDS a newer and larger facility. For the amount of drivers and freight that comes through the front gate, and across the dock during the hub operation (then setting up for inbound/city)-- we need 120 doors MINIMUM.

During the hub operation Friday/Saturday, we were hit with a flash flood thunderstorm. The yard flooded, and in some places it was 2 feet deep. All of the potholes filled with water, and it was impossible to see where they were.
It sure made for a very frustrating night.

Update:
The potholes in the yard in South Bend have been repaired.
The van line in the back of the yard has been cleared of wrecked equipment. (they were storing 5 or 6 wrecked trailers in the corner, along with a totalled tractor)--- there is a little more room to maneuver now.

Hopefully things will get better...
But since they have officially repaired the yard, and dug out the retention ponds and storm drains--- it's safe to say there won't be any new terminal for at least a few years.
