We've had a few men fail their Dot physical. What is the company policy on this or is this up to each local? In the past you were able to work the dock until you pass. But what if you're unable to pass?

Yeah , something is going on here ,cause we had 4 new Driver's all flunk there physicals in a row ??

'
Oh ,Ok , yeah we had that problem too with us old fellows, and then somebody with some power got that women Doctor , switched out of that dept. and now we are passing again ??

We had a Summa Clinic that used DOT physicals as a way to drum up business for Summa hospital. (A lot of heart and sleep apnea referred to their Hospital). The Company dropped them like a hot potato.

Cheapest isn't always better.

Same problem in MI. Really strange too. I think I brought this up in a previous thread, I was having trouble in a certain clinic, and wanted to change to another one. HR said no. She said I couldn't change clinics because its a federal law, that you have to go to the same clinic you always went to. This year she asked me which one I went to. I gave her the name of the one she wouldn't let me change to. Went to that one, was the most stress free physical I had in years. Bear in mind I had paperwork from my doc. med list, etc.
But fast forward to now, that same clinic has flunked a lot of guys and they've dropped them. One guy went for a sleep apnea test, passed it, no OSA. note from his doc, his DENTIST (no throat obstruction) and the OSA results. The clinic still flunked him because the dot doc was convinced he had sleep apnea. Said he didn't have to abide by the sleep apnea results if he didn't agree with them. The guy ended up retiring. He didn't want to and he was (is) a hell of a worker. From the sounds of it this must be going on system wide.

Blood pressure seems to be the kicker down here. A lot of White Coat syndrome. Skullcramp are they taking failed physicals out of service?

I seen a letter posted on the board that said there will be no extensions for a failed blood pressure test. I think they use to give you a 45 day extension to see your family Dr to get it under control. no more extension

Not sure Griz, haven't seen any of the guys at work so probably. I'll find out more Monday. Somethings going on. One of the stewards told me that a few of the guys had work comp issues. they came back to work and then couldn't pass the physical. I've heard that there are no more temporary cards being issued as rodeo mentioned above. I heard we did stop sending people to the clinic that was flunking everyone, but that was the one that I had particularly good luck with. I guess the new standard is to that there is no standard. It's however the doc wants to interpret the rules. I think the FMCSA wants obesity/ age rules and wants your family doc out of the picture. There is also a new rule being implemented regarding medications. The DOT doc will decide if your dosages/ combinations are correct. That's according to the latest issue LAND LINE magazine.

I guess my question is are you required to have a dot card to work the dock? We also received a verbal warning letter Friday for not having the tanker endorsement on our license. This is for hauling tote bends of haz.

You should not have to. I'm sure that there is a history of pinning guys on the dock when they could not pass their physical for some reason. In fact, there is a member here, active in the YRC forum who is just that.

wow, we've had to have the endorsements for the last 5 years or so. thought that would be system wide.

We've had guys doing dock work here in MI. How it works is you're penciled in at the bottom, either inbound or outbound/closing shift. You can work until you're forced out on a run. If no one covers you, (takes the run for you) you get sent home. We've got a lot of meesters here so sometimes a guy gets to work only to be sent home an hour later. "are you going to take the run so joe can stay? nah I don't want to go there I'll stay on the dock F*&& joe he can go home" I'm on a yard bid so I can't go out until all the dock/drive guys go out. goofy system but that's how it works here. I now return the thread to its rightful owners

All of the guys that I know of who lost their DOT card and/or their Haz Mat card were expired, were NOT offered dock work. They were taken out of service completely.
Not for sure, but that makes me think that your DOT card IS a requirement to work the dock also.
:idunno:

Neither happens in Memphis. Lose your card and your headed to dock. Go in at your bid time until you get

certified.

What if a guy with more seniority wants to bump a guy that is already on the dock?
