SAIA | DriveCam ... By Lytx

I would bet my next two pension checks and my newest motorcycle that the truck driver will be made available to the industry.

Looks like the drivecams are here. Just got 50 of the new Freightliner's in. Time to dust off the resume??

Don't forget that all the new Volvos they are buying this year have the nanny-cams as well. I dusted off the resume a couple months ago when they announced that they would eventually retrofit all the trucks with them.

Here in the Chicago area, you can pretty much pick whatever company you want to work for. They all have huge hub terminals here that have big turnover rates and always need drivers. Basically the only reason I'm still at Saia is because of the good insurance and I have a decent paying run that only takes 10 hours to do. Hard to justify making a switch until it's absolutely necessary. Just paying off all debt in the mean time.

That is the same reason I am still at Saia. I have a gravy run and the benefits are great. I really do not want to leave but the first write up I get for taking a drink of water will most likely be the last write up I will stick around to receive.

All you guys wanting to update your resume and jump ship, and still plan on driving a truck...YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE. Get used to it . Going to be industry wide here before long.
It is not so much the drivecams as it is the stupid rules. No drinking or eating, no cell phone calls with a headset (which is legal) no dipping or smoking (i do not do either but a lot of drivers do) seat belts on while hooking on the yard etc. In my opinion that is a bit much and Saia may have some unintended consequences (loosing damn good drivers) not to mention what the hell is central going to do when we all stop answering our phones or stop to call them back and bail their asses out of a jam. As far as industry wide, maybe but not in trucks I own. And if forced to put in my trucks at least I will have control. I am all for safety but I cant see the benefits outweighing the consequences in Saia's case.

If your drifting lanes and you trigger an event from taking a drink of water then you will be coached. If you are on the phone or without your seat belt on the streets you will be written up. Each set of circumstances have different levels of severity. I have driven the Freightliners exclusively since day one in P&D and know they are not as bad as the perception of them. Been coached many times for things out of my control. The system is flawed to some degree but they are needed in today's world. Like with anything you get to know how things work with DriveCam and learn how to work with it in regards to do's and don'ts ... It's here guys so jumping ship won't solve your issues with it. In two years all major players in LTL will have them. Learn to deal with it and keep the great job you have at SAIA LTL FREIGHT.

Do you guys believe this statement to be true?
That is exactly how I feel about them. I hear from talking to some lifers at Saia that dialing it back will probably be exactly what will happen. It makes since to me when it starts affecting the bottom line something will have to be done. Big question for me is do I want to stick around long enough to see if it gets dialed back.

Without going into great detail I can tell you that you should stick around. This company is on the verge of becoming the the Old Dominion. And in case you don't know OD is the most profitable LTL company in business today with a business model that is unparalleled. SAIA is growing and hopes you stick around but SAIA would rather you move on if you don't want to be part of what the leadership team is building. If you have a great run you would be a fool to quit in my opinion. Many of the lifers on here hate me because I'm so pro-company and anti-union .. You know the company ass kisser? Honestly I don't give a rats ass. Maybe my cavalier attitude comes from the fact that I could retire now debt free with a pretty big IRA. Maybe it comes from having worked for the Teamsters in the early 70's and have seen what they have devolved into. It's probably a bit of both. As far as DriveCam goes don't buy into the hype. It's not big brother trying to terminate you. Those cameras can also save your ass. I've always said if a company wants you gone they will find a reason. But if you do your job they will never find a reason. The worst thing any company can do to any employee is terminate them I suppose. As long as I have my health and my family I have everything. This is just a job and I can find another one. It's would be their loss, not mine. I've never been afraid to speak my mind to any supervisor and let the chips fall where they may. If I thought DriveCam was wrong I would say so. It's technology evolving and sometimes that's not always bad.
