XPO | Some more Scuttlebutt!

Maybe now we won't have equipment down for 2-3 days waiting for parts from Ohio when the dealer has them available in stock. Have seen it quite often with starters.
I hate to see someone loss there job.
I have to say the way the truck repair went was a huge waste of money.
OLD SYSTEM:
Truck wont start, call local mechanic charge company to come and tell you the batteries are no good and need new ones.
2 day later batteries come from part dept.
Call local mechanic to put in new batteries and charges company again
Truck down for 2-3 days.
NEW SYSTEM:
Truck wont start, call local mechanic he shows up with new batteries, starter and other know part that go bad.
Truck down 2-3hrs

I never could understand why they would park a truck for several days to wait for a part they bought for $5 less than a local part.
When local management was in charge of who to call for repairs and maintenance there was a belief that there was a lot of favoritism and lack of oversite. So things changed to the call and wait system that required authorization from higher up.

A lot of it has to do with the cost of the repairs too. It's not worth it to invest 4 grand into a 15 year old truck worth three grand. We had an old sterling that someone decided to authorize a rebuilt motor to be put in. Truck was in the retirement line a month later.

How do you explain the refurb program, I heard that they spent 60 grand a piece on those Sterlings with over a million + miles . I am sure that the frames were stressed and wiring harnesses were worn and they could have bought new trucks for just a little more money. It was a tradition to spend a dollar to save a dime !! Lol

My FOS show us that they keep tract of how much is spent on the repairs of the truck and trailers. We have a refurb truck with a lot of problems he show us this on the company system and typed in the truck number. I think since the refurb and including the refueb they have invested 90K into this truck. The refurb program is not worth the money and I believe that program is dead for the trucks. That why the truck you are talking about UPNORTH was retired. I think someone at Con-way had a big hardon for those Sterling.
I work for a company that every year look at what the repair cost on each piece of equipment and decided on replace or keep and over time found that repair cost were lower and so were breakdowns.

The mechanics love the Sterlings as well. Better fuel mileage. Easier to work on. Fewer electrical components. No DEF system. It's a cheaper vehicle to operate and maintain. So yeah, the upper brass and the wrench monkeys love them.

As drivers the Sterlings lack creature comforts. But we all know the difference pulling a hill. It's just more comfortable taking longer to get there with XM radio and AC and cruise control.

Anyone with a brain could look at the system Con-way used to part source repairs and know it was all wrong. More LEAN team ingenuity. It's unfortunate that people lost their jobs. But there is absolutely no reason to use such an antiquated system. The longer a truck is out of service the more money you lost on top of all the money you spent handling the part 12 times before it got to the point of repair.
