ABF | UE runs

Not a word about elimination, Brother. Expansion is the word we're hearing,......Especially since the UE operation switched to 5/8's from the 4/10's.

And currently , with flat freight levels, any expansion of UE work will come at the expense of existing road runs.......

Get it there faster so the EOL terminals can sit on the freight until the due date........Because they can't hire dock/city guys to deliver it........

Throw piles of OT money at the UE operation,.......Yet starve out any potential new hire by yanking him around with on-call, less pay, no vacations for 2+ years........Barely,......or not,......making his benefits.............Yup,....All that will certainly attract new people to our company........

Invest in great, wonderful, cutting-edge technology with 21st century PDA's and EOBR's............to put in our 900,000 mile rattletrap tractors........

Our company is supposedly run on "Christian" principles,.....And all I can think of is the Biblical phrase: " Let not thy right hand knoweth what thy left hand doeth.".........
 
January 7 is the date for elimination of Knoxville, Birmingham, Shreveport , and Laffeyette as exchange points. We will know in 1 week. This from a current UE driver
 
All four of those terminals are HVXP exchange points? That would be a heck of a lot of UE runs being eliminated.....

Or,......Do those four points run to a central HVXP? Still, eliminating four runs is quite a bit. I thought they needed a Change of Operations to eliminate runs. They can add runs according to Art. 3 sec. 7 without a COO, but they can't eliminate them without filing the change.

Hopefully no one loses their bid, but I think I would wait to see a COO posted before I would regard it as a happening thing.
 
This is happening. New bids have been posted. These are HV exchange points and it effects around 20 men at the Birmingham and Knoxville points. Our terminal did add another to run to Atlanta.
 
Article 3 sect 7 also says they can modify positions without a change or union approval of any kind. Just going by what our UE man says.

Yes, they can modify,........But they can't reduce the amount of bids without a change. Work expanded and developed has to go somewhere, and to a Teamster.

It's good if they're streamlining the operation. And,......... It's nice to see them adding a run at Brother Big Daddy's terminal.

UE bids are considered city bids, and just like any other city bid can be eliminated or adjusted due to lack of work or changes in freight levels. The language in the UE section of the contract gives the company a great deal of latitude, and we all know how great the union has been at representing our interests lately!
 
Heard allentown is going to lose it's Greensburg ue run, for not being cost effective. Heard six or seven more could be also. Anyone hear anything?
 
Look on roundtable, losing 200 ue.
Actually, the response on Roundtable was " There are no plans to turn 200 UE positions into road drivers."
Now that doesn't mean there are no changes in the works, but the company spokesperson is saying that this particular scenario is not happening.

Road drivers cost lots more than UE and city drivers, only a fool would think that they would create road positions out either one.

Yeah all that means is that they are planning on eliminating 200 UE runs and turning 199 of them into road runs. Don't expect to get an honest answer about future plans on roundtable.

I'm at Greensburg, and I haven't heard that we are losing any UE guys. As you know, we are the NDXP,....... so there are about 15 UE runs turning our dock at night.

Just because I haven't heard anything doesn't mean it's not going to happen. I'll have to ask our dock guys what the rumor machine is generating.
 
UE drivers= The original, number 1, "Yes Men".

As I'm going to retire in two months , I gave up the steward's position I had for 16 years, and one of the biggest future problems that me and the new steward had talked about was our UE run going to 5 days.

Now that it is 5 days, the work week is about 55 - 57 hours. Of course, the company has no problem paying overtime after 8. The problem isn't the money....... it's the time.

If you're divorced or single, and have no home or family life, then of course you want this run. However, not everyone fits that description, and as some of the older guys who have these runs retire....... ( or other...),.... then these runs will be forced on the bottom of the board, as per language in Art. 3. sec. 7. State of Penna. currently does not deny Unemployment Compensation to anyone who refuses a job where they are required to work crossing state lines. The money is......"nice"....... but there are many guys who only want to run the city and won't/can't run the road at night.

Sooner or later, one of these jobs are going to be forced on a guy and cause a divorce. These are road runs, plain and simple, and should not be forced off the bottom of the city board.

I haven't heard of any current UE guy complaining about the excessive overtime, even though they are setting up run conditions that other, junior employees are going to get jammed down their throats.

I know I don't want to work an extra 15 hours a week......... I don't even want an extra 5 or 6 hours,...... but sometimes it's inevitable..,... This is trucking, ........

But I regard a bid that's designed to produce an extra 15 hours of overtime a week as an abuse of overtime......( In my opinion, a penalty your employer pays for keeping your CDL license at risk longer than eight hours..)
........And, an abuse of what should be a road bid......

Hey, guys voted yes for this........Only in trucking ......I don't see train engineers or airline pilots accepting excessive overtime like this...

Congrats on your up coming retirement. You have earned it. Tread lightly, no injuries. And on the last day clock in & don't do a thing but meet & greet. What, they gonna fire you for not taking your run. It's tradition in a lot of companies. Last day is a free skate number. von.
