Last night the road drivers in many Northeast Terminals were told they have to work tonight because the system is all backed up from the storm on Tuesday. Meanwhile some had volunteer list up all week long. Then on friday night it was down and told mandatory work. If your bid is HGR or NHS you have to go,all others that don't go there can stay home. We will call you at 3pm to let you know.
I have a problem with this, my bid is a signed legal document that says Monday through Friday. If I have to wait for a call at home then I am working and should be compensated. Also the first ones that should go is the xtra board drivers and when that's depleted then you go to the bottom city guys because the road drivers must protect there bid. Now how is that right that guys used there personal or vacation time for Monday and Tuesday and now you tell them they have to work Saturday and they just wasted there vacation time. You can't tell me the company didn't know this was going to happen on Wednesday.
If anyone had a brain in planning they would have had terminals and hubs building trap trailers with the freight that was weather coded. It's already late concentrate on What needs to be delivered now and free up the docks and pups. That is why alot of places have no empties they are full with freight. Then have the office personel make phone calls to the customers to see what we can get off of our docks for Saturday delivery and bring in city drivers.

I do agree it should go to extra board first and then it should go to the regular bid drivers after that, why should city drivers have to cover road runs? City has bids also if it was flipped around they wouldn't be using road drivers to cover city bids.

Where to start?? :scratchhead:

First, there's this thing called an "adverse weather policy" and it trumps regular policy in the event of adverse weather.

Second, your bid is NOT a "signed legal document"...that's funny....let me know how that holds for ya up in a court of law!!

Third, sounds as if you want your cake and to eat it too. In the case of "mandatory work", if all runs are cancelled then everyone is placed on the extra board, and in some cases only certain bids are cancelled and the rest go to extra board. Either way, runs are offered from the top down to honor seniority with the bottom of the board being forced out if enough drivers don't volunteer. City drivers can volunteer but can't be forced to run the road.

Fourth, there is NO policy that allows drivers to "pass to protect their bid", that is a myth!! The company would "prefer" to keep you on your bid for obvious reasons but we are in the service industry and it's our job to provide that service for our customers...in the event of adverse weather, if you have the hours available, you're expected to be available to work...period.

Fifth, guys use vacation during adverse weather all the time. If you have to work Sat/Sun, then retract one or more of your vacation days to save for a later date...simple.

Sixth, if anyone had a brain, they'd realize they have a role within the company and they'd be ready to perform that role when called upon. In this case, you're a driver so be prepared to drive when needed....truck safe!!

Seriously, I don't like "adverse weather/mandatory work" any more than the next guy but it's not like it happens every week either, the fact is it only happens a few times a year, if at all...suck it up buttercup!!

FOR the reason I stated, road drivers have to protect there bids , city guys are on the clock they don't have hours to worry about.

Where do I begin with a Company man hmmmm. First runs weren't canceled they closed down 2 different things. My bid is a signed legal document and is to why you have to sign it management is not supposed to. We'll see what the NLRB says about that. And the rest of your stuff doesn't even pertain to what I wrote . So again you wrote a lot of meaning full nothing and blew a lot of hot air as usual.

So I guess that because as you stated " the bid sheet is a signed legal document " and also stated it's Monday through Friday, Weekend volunteers should go out by company seniority regardless of weather you are city or road. After all if you don't have a weekend bid then the city with 10 or 15 years seniority should get the extra work before a road driver with 5 years.

Has nothing to do with being a "company man"...which I'm not, I'm a Redracer man!! I guess you missed the part where I said, "I didn't like it anymore than the next guy"...!!
News flash: when you close down that means runs are cancelled!!
Perhaps you should re-read our policies...including the adverse weather policy...they clearly say if you have the hours available, you must be available for work (including weekends) and again, the adverse weather policy supersedes regular policies.
Your bid is NOT a "signed legal document" and I'm sure the NLRB will laugh about as hard as I did when they hear this argument.
Sure it does, you just refuse to accept it because I'm right and you disagree with it...which is typical.

Im not following your reasoning city or road both have 70 hours a week. We had our SCM try and make our bottom city guys run every Sat a few years back, that got cleared up real fast when one of them had a talk with regional director when the U push was going. Now instead of running a city guy on daytime meat every Sat and running a city guy up there Tue through Fri they have an extra bid for the road Mon thru Fri which is the way it should have been to begin with.

I think the point about protecting the bid was being available for the start time the next week, being able to do a reset (can't figure out how to do logs without reset) and being afraid of missing a day next week due to not being able to reset.

AND SHE SAID HE WASN'T GETTING ANY IF HE WENT TO WORK.

Unless they work Sat AND Sun, almost every driver can reset come Monday. The 34 hour reset isn't mandatory, it's a luxury, they can always resort back to 60/7 if needed.

Had this happen once. When we left on Friday nite the SCM said he would call us Saturday to tell us the details. He called I didn't answer, and guess what they found some one else to run it. Asked if I was going to be given a point he said no.
