Yellow | Just got hired as a dock worker, have a couple questions.

Do you really crush freight?
Fine, don't answer. I was just going to tell you if you don't mind using your real name, just tell everyone where you'll be working. You just might get better answers. Just telling everyone the northeast doesn't help getting answers to your questions.
Example: if you say "I'll be at Carlisle, Pa", someone call tell you if there's a work shoe rule and whether or not it is enforced. You'll probably get a better idea of how much OT you'll see and what start time you'll get. See where I'm getting at? As far as crushing freight, it's not a common practice for me. I'm a driver and it's been a long time since I've worked outbound. Pretty soon you'll be crushing freight though. It's common practice at YRC. That picture Big R posted was pretty tame compared to what you're going to see.

I don't crush any freight. I work and stack outbound. If I have to you will see and have more deck bars in and from my loads than freight if I have to. I make it easy for you. That's if you worked inbound. Because it's just easy to do. We do have brains. Use em. Paid exercise.

Yes, from the way you write a sentence, it's very obvious you have brains. How did you get to be so smart?:17142::hilarious::17142:

I was just being a smartass, man. I actually will be working in Carlisle, you hit the nail on the head right there.

In my hey day the question was not if I used them it was if I could find them. Deck bars cost money. Goes against TM's budget. Or should say Service Center Manager's budget. Best used to load long stuff, steel, canoes, fiberglass extruded aluminum & other things light that would bounce around easy & damage other freight or itself. von.

Well let me be the first to welcome you into the Central States Pension Plan. As long as retirement is something you can do without, you made a good choice. Carlisle is a good area for ltl. Large hubs there for every carrier. I can't help you with that terminal but i would bet it's a 7 day operation with all the OT you could ask for. If you don't like the -15% thing I suggest you apply at the ABF terminal right down the road. ABF also doesn't have the debt load YRC has. The health insurance is identical. They hire dock workers off the street as well. They also pay 75% more into the pension plan. That might not even matter considering the plan it's going into. Good luck whatever you do. I'm sure there are some Carlisle people on here. That place is huge.

Jeff run while u still can . Most of the guys that are left were close to retirement.we have nowhere else to go. Run Forest run!!!

You will get a lot of forced OT when it gets busy you will work every fri sat and Sunday if you don't mind working weekends and living life at the mercy of a telephone for a few years you will be fine and no we have no rules on shoes

If the company requires you to have a uniform and I would argue shoes are a uniform item they are to pay for it. otherwise they are your feet and you only get 1 set of them so choose to do with them what you want.

For starters, I assume safety toe boots are a requirement, however, I'll be walking a mile to and from work each day (I live close by, and it's good exercise), and composite is much lighter. I have walked in Carolina's CA5520's before (my brother owns a pair) and they are very comfortable, are they okay, or do I need steel toes?

Second question, uniform. Is it pretty much anything goes? And by "anything" I mean jeans and a t-shirt?

Thanks in advance for your answers!
Here is some real advice don't loose sight you have to work 30 days to get in the union means you are at everybody mercy the workers don't like you, so be very friendly the main thing put the freight in the trailer not on the dock is what they go by what is scan your boss well for get all the trailers you had to strip cause one of the workers mess up. The boss don't care how a good worker you are it is chanch to play god, good luck Phil
