FedEx Freight | Freight and National to merge effective January 30, 2011.

The question is, how many are still around?

I moved twice before I landed, of the 90 or so road drivers that I worked with in the affected terminals, less than 20 are still employed by this company.

All of that taught me to EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! (And say no to the $50k pickups)

Yeah you never know. The mighty and meak are all subject to fall or submit to change for the worse at any time. I'm sure a lot of us including myself are guilty of living beyond our means.

True, I don't have the 50k pickup, but it's certainly understandable why someone would like to buy a big flashy toy to remind them exactly why their working 65 hours a week in the dead of night
 
FedEx bought Watkins for Canada. They've denied it all along, but if it really wasn't the case then why did they close Watkins (National) as soon as the contracted guarantee of five years of employment for all Watkins employees was up?

FedEx wanted Canada badly. Day & Ross refused them. So they did something ridiculous and bought a company just to get a Canadian company.

Oh hell, yea we all know the truth about that. They didn't seem to be bothered by throwing all those employees under the bus either. Took me years to get over it, but that's that I guess

Watkins Canada Express was a mess. Prior to Watkins buying it in 2004, it was a small company called Fairway Canadian Express. Watkins brought money with them, and expected everyone to paint their trucks red. Two years later, FedEx bought Watkins and everyone had to paint their trucks white.

A million "likes" from me!!!!

The purchase of Watkins NEVER involved growing and making them a viable company...as some would like to believe...they were bought for their already obtained rights to operate in Canada...period!! It was cheaper and faster to buy Watkins to get Canada than it would've been to pursue the rights to operate in Canada on their own!!

Yes and if you want to see what FedEx did to the national side after they bought Watkins read this book by Steve Newhouse. You call this f-ing leadership the demise of FedEx national. Its a real eye opener to what they did to us. Still have a bad taste from it. Amazon has the book

That book was written by someone who "thought" they were going to continue operating Watkins/National and make them a viable company...that was never the plan!! It seems the only ones who weren't aware of the plan was the Watkins management/employees themselves.

Yes maybe but I survived that mess and what was in the book was a lot of truth. I'm a transplant that now has a 93 mile commute to work because of it. Now I'm at a very disgruntled center because 70 of us merged into a pack of lies. I find it interesting after 6 years we are still talking about it. The wounds will never heal till parties of both AF and Watkins are all gone.

What was in the book was a perceived truth by those who didn't know or want to believe the plan.
That's sad, we had almost 40 Watkins' drivers dovetail in at CLT, most are still here, and almost everyone gets along just fine...most have put the merger behind us and have moved on.

I wouldn't drive it to work if I bought one. I always tell guys you leave the best stuff at home and drive the clunker to work.

You don't want the boss seeing it knowing you're that much in debt because then he knows he can really give you a hard time and you're a yes man due to owing the bank.

Another giveaway is burning vacation the minute you get a day off due to freight volume or weather. They make mental notes of these things. They know who's over a barrel financially.

I assume you read the book then, and that's fine on your opinion from it, I'm not here to judge either way. I will say it's hard to know the plan when your kept in the dark and just a driver in the system. Pat Reed and Doug Ducker lead us on a wild pack of lies. There is still a lot of us left at cmh but there is still some hurt feelings and some behind the back stuff that still goes on. I see it all the time, some will deny some will agree. It is what it is.
Oh I forgot at least 20 drivers merged into cmh from Dayton before the merge and then a year later we merge

I've always gone by this philosophy also. Another thing I don't do is Facebook period or any social media with anyone that works with me. The less they know the better off you are.
