FedEx Freight | New equipment

The new volvos aka Fedex beeper torture , they beep way to much for me. I changed bids just to get out of it. Went from beeping all day to just one or two beeps a day.

Just got my new Peterbilt Award tractor, and the various electronic beepers are much more tolerable than anything else we have..

Interesting... I've found this new Volvo to be LESS irritating, in terms of alert bells, whistles, etc. :scratchhead:

Different sounds, but also totally different parameters for the alerts. Example: Lane departure in Pete gives the thunderous alert. The Volvo sounds something like sticking a piece of metal into a spinning fan blade. Score this one a tie.

Especially on start-up, the Pete (R17xxx) would go through the entire array of thunderous tones. Obviously more of an issue in the city, with lots of trips in and out of the truck. Not an issue with this one. Score one for the Volvo.

On following distance, The Pete give a visual (x number of seconds shown on dash) alert long before the audible at around 1.7 seconds. This Volvo offers no indication of seconds of following distance and goes straight to audible. I've not checked it with a stop watch, but it appears to beep at 5 seconds, although it may be 4. More of an issue for road, I think, but still an irritant for all. Score one for the Pete.

As a road driver swamp I'll take the Pete all day long. I had a Pete 18xxx ,never had one single video recording the whole time I had it. Received a new Volvo same run I've been running for 7 years and you find yourself to turning the beeps into white background noise. Quess what four headways later because I'm not going to sit there and count seconds all day long I switched bids just to get out of it. The guy who took my bid and driving the Volvo now got a headway first week. It just beeps way to much for me at 5 seconds away from something. Beep beep beep all day long. My new Pete may beep twice a day. Got my sanity back.
You can keep the volvos.

The Pete cab vents are on the back of the cab, no way to close them and they continually blow exhaust, fuel fumes, regen fumes ,whatever into the cab. I finally duct taped mine off as a fix
Seems like most of the Petes do the same thing. By the end of my work week my sinuses are pretty f'd up

I understand completely. The Pete is a good truck, for the road. Stable, good lines for lane management, outstanding climate control, sound system, better fit and finish, etc. But the Volvo has a better ride, better viability (with the exception of the huge blind spot behind mirrors), more interior room, easier steering, maneuverability, etc. This Volvo has a far superior auto-shift, making for a better day in the city, IMHO.

On these "audible alerts", I wonder why the totally different parameters for triggering the alerts. I get that the Pete has a more sophisticated dash readout, and the seconds shown long before audible is a big plus, taking the guesswork out of the equation. (should probably score 2 points on the whole following distance system). I wonder why the settings are so vastly different. One would think there is an adjustment for uniformity.

What sucks is the Volvo does have a second readout for following distance, but it's a upgrade option and would have a extra button on turn signal arm. The newer Pets's have the air ride cab and I find the ride is about the same between the two. In time the beeping in the Volvo you learn to tune out and that's when it gets you in trouble. 1/10 of a second to close following distance will trigger a video

Something to be aware of:

If you've gotten used to the Pete, in tight quarters operation:

The fairing extender/protector (whatever it is called), on the Pete is heavy, flexible rubber. Very forgiving.

Beware, the VOLVO has hard plastic that will not take kindly to any contact at all. It will be damaged on first contact. Same goes for the bumper guard/extension.

BUT, have no fear! The grab handle will make contact on the right side, LONG before the extender...

Personally not had any issues, BUT I thought it might be good for the class to know...
