Elogs came up in another thread, and since many of us are getting started on them I thought there may be some good discussion about them. If you have started on elogs, how are you liking them? Had any issues come up that we might be able to learn from?

We're on them now, and I haven't heard of any of our guys not liking them. It's especially nice when you have a few days off and it automatically fills out for you.

In the other thread you said nothing is rounded. So does it go by the minute or fall back to the last quarter hour?

It goes by the minute. I like them but wish it still went to the quarter hour. But over all it's nice, it keep a running tally of hours left for drive time, till time for break at 8th hour, and time left till 14. So it's much easier to remember these without having to keep looking at paysheet

I have run elogs with other companies and know you will love them and hate them. The big thing you all will like is not having to fill out those paper logs at the end of every day. Call that a 15min saving per day or 1hr 15mins less time at work per week. I know the city guy will like with have not to do a log if they work over 12hrs. I know when I came here I was surprised that as safety anal this place is they were still doing paper logs. The next thing to get ride of is those 8300 inspection forms. I haven't filled those out in years until I came here.

It's going to put pressure on the sics now. My fac started a rescue bid this week, facs in our area have started a strict cut time to minimize rescues.
I feel when the whole system is online with the elogs they will start look at anybody that is delaying freight weather it the driver of the sics or fac.

What's a bummer about them is there is no getting out of taking your lunch in 8. Several times last winter I was racing snowstorms and I'd have to stop for 31 minutes while the storm was catching me.

30 minute break is stupid. It should be optional, company cannot hold it against me for taking it. For example, I am tired on my trip home and I would like to pull off and take a nap. Another example is yours, a storm is right behind me and its hammerdown to stay in front it. No time for napping.

I would still take a nap on the way home.

As a city driver, the busiest time of the day is between my 4th and 6th hour and often times up to my 8th, which is when I'm supposed to take my lunch. I think the DOT sucks with it's mandatory 8 hour lunch rule for road drivers and the company sucks more for imposing it on city drivers just to cover it's butt.

It may be 30-45 minutes later, but sometimes it just may be that nap that gets you and the freight back at all....
Its not the 30 mins naps on there break. Its the 1 and 2 hrs naps that are the problem. You know your work schedule it your job to be rested when you go to work. I sure you wouldn't want the painter taking nap while on the job

Take your lunch when you are able , not when you are told. Problem solved.

A lot of city drivers face similar situations to the one you described and they take lunch when things slow down or when they decide it's best to take lunch. Very few drivers take lunch at the same time everyday if I had to guess. Don't kill yourself worrying about this rule.

thats exactly what we say when we get back after our eta, better a little late then picking it up off the highway. Not that management questions us. Some drivers are excessively late every day (one hour or more), to that point I agree with Fly By Night, you should be getting more rest when you are off duty.

For what I heard and seen FedEx what almost all there drivers empty by 1300hrs. Also the FedEx barn near me has all there driver in by 9 am including flex board while our flex is coming in at noon since they don't have a trk to drive. I always laughed when I'm on my second deliver at 1400hrs with 5 left to do and dispatch dumping pickups on me. and FedEx is on his 2 pickup and had his lunch.

At one time I ran a town with a FedEx driver, I would get to the usual meet point to break my set around noon, then start my day of deliveries and pick ups. The FedEx driver would be empty, doing lunch break and waiting for pick ups. CCX, Con-way and XPO have always been the last company on the street.

That's a big problem when you compare services and how LTLs are perceived by the customers. XPO management has a "rob-Peter-to-pay-Paul-mentality"
IIf you move start times of P&D from 9am to 10:30 , don't complain about drivers getting back later with the same deliveries and pick-ups.

On the elog deal I had a linehaul driver on a long run tell me he will just move his lunch to show during his dock time and he won't have any problem with his "barely-legal-run"
