ODFL | Collision Mitigation System (CMS)

You young drivers get so upset when us old timers school you. Just deal with it and drive the truck. You get paid 6 figs do what you're told, not to call the shots. You're just a line driver and CRST can do the same job you do.

For someone who claims to be real smart, you should know better than to make assumptions about someone you have no clue about. Guess your not that smart after all.

I realized something about this system. It can create a false sense of security. I mean I understand the why and how of it. I'm not against it, but as a driver you still need to react. Today I experienced a few wrecks, but I had 2 blowouts right in front of me. Cruise was on both times but traffic went all over due to the blowouts. It was my maneuvering and reaction that allowed me to avoid the chaos.
Another thing that is happening it is picking up vehicles doing a lower speed limit, thus braking my tractor when no vehicles are doing that speed limit.
Moral be aware and alert. It's a valuable tool, but it's up to us as the driver to react.

It's just an additional tool to help you drive down the road. It's not meant to replace anything of what you're already doing. Not sure if it would've helped you during your triples rollover event..

Billy are you sure you have the right guy lol, he's said a few times he hasn't rolled any triples, making ur thinking of some swift driver haha.
Thank you and I appreciate the post. Billy is in his own world. Since we have the same Regional Safety Supervisor, he would be able to know the facts.
I'm just sharing information about the CMS as different things happen or I hear from other drivers. I do believe that Billy is wrong about the brakes automatically being applied when it is not in cruise control. I've never experienced that. The distance warning beep goes off, but the brakes are not applied. Thus in extreme weather or traffic, I personally do not use the cruise control.

The video I watched noted that if the system believed something large is stopped it in fact would apply the breaks weather cruise was on our not. But that is the only time it would take action for you.

Thanks for the information

It won't brake with the cruise off just if it beeps but if it senses that you're going to hit something it'll try launching you through the windshield. Don't you have any friends with this system outside of OD? everyone has it.

Trends I've noticed in trucking are that every company who orders cms eventually installs cameras.

It'll still keep you from following too close with cruise on but the braking feature doesn't work in freezing temps. Every carrier except OD has these in their trucks. Ask any driver the last time it jammed the brakes on in snow and ice?

Think with your brains drivers, I know we hire guys who never finished HS, but these fake stories or false scenarios need to stop. Corporate safety can fill you in on the details, don't sit here looking for truck driver word of mouth.

That's really insulting and I don't even work for OD. Our corporate is like your corporate. You would rather koolaid their corporate and college educated spin then accept the possibility that "guys who never finished high school" may know what they are talking about. After 20 years out here, I've been abused by sensors, that are acting up, and these trucks are full of sensors. Your trucks are too and they can act up just like the sensors in my companies trucks.

Yeah, the guys we hire are severely overweight, smokes more than a old Detroit, use to be former addicts, dropped out of hs and we want them to make decisions to make us money? This company isn't where it's at today listening to know it all drivers.

I agree with BillyLo on the camera issue and will go him one better. The insurance companies will pressure OD to install outward facing cameras and then, in the not so distant future, install the inward facing cameras. It's just a matter of time. Check some of the other LTL sections and you will see what is coming. It ain't pretty.

Those know it all drivers are sitting in the chair. What kind of chairs are the Corporate Safety people sitting in?

Just like it is suppose to work perfectly all the time huh Billy?. It screws up now and it MAY do it when there is snow, ice or even wet roads after the rain in a long time. Now before you feel the need to lecture me, I realize it is not suppose to, but no one can guarantee it will not malfunction, hence it being called a malfunction! :smiliepostwhore:

CMS is still in it's infancy, much like the 121 braking system introduced back around 1978.
We were assured if it malfunctioned, it switched to manual and driver would never know, except loss of antiskid feature.
After two serious accidents, they were disabled from the whole fleet.
They also found hi powered linear amps on cb radios could trigger a braking event on closeby vehicles with this system.
Now if you think ANYTHING manmade, cannot malfunction, you are playing Russian roulete, fooling yourself bigtime.

Exactly. Look at the def system, different tractors had problems with it. The infamous BLU, reboot, not communicating of events. That's the point of this post. To let each other share problems and concerns about the CMS.

I have had it break with the cruise off doing about 40ish in the city. I was even applying the break, just not hard enough I guess. I had it under control but the truck decided otherwise.

I agree, its only a matter of time until we have forward and driver facing cameras. I will hate every second being filmed in that truck, but I will have no choice but to put up with it. Its just a sign of the times, the way it is. I will just have to pick my nose more then.

Think you're right, I'd just about bet the farm, somewhere down the road, this will be a requirement on all commercial trucks.

It has braked me 3 times this week ..no cruise. Today was on a 2 lane and car up ahead a decent distance was making a right hand turn. It decided we were about to collide and totally hard core put me in the windshield. 2 days ago it did twice in one day, the one of the two I remember was a car that wanted into another lane damn near stopped in front of me and it decided I needed to brake harder then I was. Please google the Meritor FAQ's it is operational when the truck is moving over 15mph ... IGNORE BILLY : )
