SAIA | Wage increase

The only one I can think of is FedEx Freight. The rest are 50-60 at least in Texas.

In the N.E. ABF, YRC, New Penn , XPO & Fedex Frght are after 8. NEMF is either after 40 or 8 not sure( machinist union). ODFL after 60, R&L straight pay, Estes after 45 or 50 depending on state, Pitt Ohio - straight pay for 3 years then OT after 40, Duie after 45, Teals straight pay, What's left of Land Air of NE- after 50 and RIST is either 40 or 45. Central Transport is after 50 or all straight pay- not sure.

Time & a half after 45? You can do better than that with just about any other trucking company. von.

We were talking non-union so when you take away ABF .. YRC .. UPSF .. NEW PENN .. HOLLAND .. And any other union carrier I forgot you begin to understand that SAIA is a pretty good deal. When you compare them to the non-union LTL companies SAIA pretty much stands apart as far as OT compensation.

Name one non-union LTL company that's better. OD is after 60 ....At $26.17hr. plus OT after 45 I have no complaints in Dallas. The Philly region is in the 28hr. range.
SAIA stands apart from the non-union carriers as far as OT. That's all I was saying. Von was making SAIA sound cheap.

This started it. When you compare apples to apples SAIA pays better in the non-union category. Von is wrong.
I have been wrong in the past. But it is always about perception. And after 18 years of service to ABF my bank accounts perception of Central States & what ABF paid each week to CS is around 2 grand a month. My PERCEPTION of SAIA is what pension money after 18 years. Or do I not have the big picture? von.

My intent was not to bad mouth your company, but to compare overall compensation for a union versus a non-union carrier. Like I said a minute ago it is all about perception. So please, tell me what SAIA offers after 18 years of service to a driver who retires. For if my perception is wrong, please correct me so MY perception is correct. von.

Things like compensation and retirement benefits should be looked at in today's age as what's going to benefit a person more long term like 20-30 years into the future. It's no secret most truck drivers are baby boomers and getting ready to retire in the next few years. Where you live also plays a huge role in pension vs 401k. Most east coast Teamster pensions are in trouble not out west. So there's no one size fits all in this argument.

My negative opinion of the union is much like that of ABFer and I will just leave it at that. I won't get into a pissing contest on this because it would never end and I have better things to do these days. One of the selling points the Teamsters always had was free healthcare and the pension. With SAIA the healthcare is free after 10 years of service. And the Teamsters pension is questionable unless you are in the western conference. So why would a new guy want to be part of the Teamsters? The new hires get screwed these days with that so-called last contract. Hell, OD drivers start at more than the top out pay at YRC AND ABF. I can understand senior guys staying but not the new hires. That's just part of why the Teamsters are failing. The Teamsters got the LTL industry pay up so for that they deserve credit. But they have sold out the members the last few years and most current members agree. Read their forums lately? It's not pretty. Here at the local 745 in Texas and being part of Central States is really ugly. My existing IRA and 401K match to 6% with SAIA is much more appealing.

How sure are you that the free health care after 10 years will not fade away to shareholder value ?

I used to be confident free benefits after ten years wasn't going away. But, they also guaranteed that they had no necessity for driver facing cameras and look at where we're at now.

i, by all means, hope it doesn't go away but I think it's only a matter of time.

I feel the same way (I think it's only a matter of time).....If they don't get people hired, and the profit margins drop it wouldn't surprise me if O'Dell retires...Karla gets replaced, someone is going to be history......
