TForce | UPS to Freeze Pension Plans for Nonunion Staffers

Are these defined benefit plans that are being replaced by 401k's or what?

This nation does not treat it's people right in any way.
UPS is lucky, as are all companies here, to have a safe country to make money in...lots of money....and they should start waking up to the fact that always taking from the workers will eventually make it very unsafe.

In my opinion, none of you UPS Freight workers should fall into the depth of despair over this development.

After reading the links posted on this topic, they are targeting non-union workers, which I would think would be supervision.
Small pack & Freight union workers would not be effected.

What makes me nervous is the timing of this. We are heading into negotiations in a few months and one of the first things there going to attack is the pension plans. They are then going to use the fact that they are freezing the non-union plans starting in 5 years and they are going to plant the seed to get rid of our pension plans, or do as Boeing did and make it that all new employees are in the 401k with a match. Thats what scares me.

It's a false flag first proposal will be something like no pay raises keep contractors work more hours, second will be small pay raise much more contractors but you loose your pension. Start saving $50 a week now and by July you'll have $2500 to strike with that should last you 3 weeks. Chances are the strike would be less than 2 weeks.

...Not yet....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Parcel_Service_strike_of_1997#The_strike
....The United Parcel Service strike of 1997, led by
International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) President Ron Carey, started on August 4, 1997, and involved over 185,000 teamsters (IBT members)....
....The way in which the union was structured meant that all Teamsters would receive synonymous benefits, regardless of what company they actually worked for. These benefits were controlled by the Teamsters multi-employer pension fund. UPS wanted to back out of the plan, and offer their workers a new pension plan that UPS would control.[26] Ultimately, UPS agreed to keep their workers in the Union benefits plan.

I wouldn't count on UPS using this pension freeze as just a bargaining tool. This ain't 1997.
With the blessing of Hoffa and his cronies, UPS left Central States in 2007 and even then this article was sounding an alarm.
http://makeupsdeliver.org/new-ups-pension-plan-can-undercut-other-pensions/

Fast forward to 2017 and with all due respect to the poster, who suggested that a new strike would be over in just a few weeks, The IBT is not as strong as it was and it's sellout Hoffa and his hand picked blowjobber, Sean O'Brien, leading the IBT negotiating team vs UPS. Remember when O'Brien got his new job and the Teamsters for a Democratic Union wrote, In picking O'Brien, Hoffa "has chosen one of the chief architects of the UPS deals that were roundly rejected by the members in 2013." Now, UPS has just told 70,000 nonunion employees that they are not going to get a pension and what they didn't ask is and what these 70,000 fellow employees want to know is what is the IBT going to do about it? The answer is nothing and go screw yourselves. The IBT has allowed UPS to drive a wedge between union and a sizable group of non union employees. When UPS comes after the union pension and maybe you guys strike, you can expect the same support from those 70,000 fellow employees, when you ask them to not cross the picket lines. This ain't 1997.

I agree, if we strike it isn't going to be a quick strike unless and only if small package strikes at the same time. With the climate were in and 401k plans are the norm instead of defined pensions no one is going to care in the non union sector. We need to and together and get the people negotiating our futures to tell them and hold there feet on there necks the pension is not on the table, if they try walk out. Period, that is the only reason I stay at this job, I can make just as much at Old Dominon as here and be treated better.

I received my notice of the pension restructure yesterday, informing me my pension payments are safe till 2023.
All righty then I'm 73 & 1/2 now,6 years from now I'll be pushing 80.
If I'm still above ground,& Jesus hasn't returned to take his church out of here to our eternal home.
I am happy to have seen this news on the trucking board before I received that notice.

I also know the way the current economy is,pensions for the working class are becoming history.
The draw back of the 401k's is they are routed in the stock market,if you are stock savvy you can do alright.
However you can also come up short if you invest in the wrong stocks.
Oh well that is life, give it your best & don't worry about the stuff you have no control over.

I sure hope that all of our employees keep a close eye on what the company wants for concessions regarding our pension. In my opinion there was a reason that the company went public with their pension freeze for non union employees at the same time we started our contract negotiations. My hope is that all employees especially the new and young employees will not allow any changes to our pension except more company cost of living contributions to our plan. Any negative talk about our pension should not be tolerated. Fight to keep what you have earned. More and more companies are taking away their company paid pensions. Don't let this happen. Our pension is what separates us from all the other freight companies. Do you want to work forever? Especially for UPS a company known to overwork their employees. Make sure that your local union hall knows that your Pension is priority!

What ever it takes to keep our pension!

So Pension is your main concern right? Most of you senior guys are depending on the Pension correct? It’s up to the New and Young employees to keep the Pension correct? Were the Senior guys concerned about the younger guys or new employees when CONTRACTORS come into our barns and take our work? I can answer that and the answer is no. As long as the senior guys have runs they can care less what happens to the young or new employees that’s why we are in this situation right now. So miss me with that Young and New Employees stuff. Ask your senior guy friends for help with the Pension BROTHER.

Actually its not. You see I have already done my time and am eligible for my full pension. Sorry your so miserable and want to blame employees that have done nothing but time. If you don't want to protect your future, UPS will take it.......enjoy!

Another thing you must’ve been very careless with your Money old timer cause if you was you wouldn’t be on here crying about saving the Pension and asking the young to help save it. Maybe in another life time you’ll be more manageable with your financials. Lol ENJOY.
