SAIA | NE Expansion

Regarding Harrisburg (Mount Joy), this is what I can confirm. Saia is leasing the former NEMF terminal, 55 doors and in really good shape. This terminal was closed when the crunch began and the service area was split between the larger terminals in Camp Hill and Lehighton. Many of us near-and-dear to NEMF feel the closing was a mistake and we now wish we had it back as we are facing some capacity issues at the other terminals.

It's my understanding this terminal will open May 1. There are about 40 brand new trailers sitting in the yard. I believe Saia already has some sales reps on the street as of last week. The rumor is that Saia will operate out of here for about 18 months and then move to a new facility to be built in the Harrisburg area. They already have the land; don't know where.

For those who know the area, we peddled from Middletown west to Columbia, south to Quarryville and Parkesburg, east to Reading and Pottstown, north to Lebanon and Jonestown. The terminal is located right off 283 which provided easy access to anyplace. Working here was a lot of fun.

We've been running from quarryville/The buck/new providence before Lanc. Term closed from north east, md for years. We finally got Baltimore reopened an took our area back in Chester co. Out to Phily from pennsauken a year an a half ago.

Any recent news for the Mt Joy / Harrisburg area terminal? One of our drivers who's leaving for SAIA said during his interview that a HR rep said the land deal fell through in Middletown. Also said that they're looking for more P&D than linehaul currently. I'm guessing any drivers who jump in at SAIA in Harrisburg area will be setting themselves up for some quick climbs in seniority once they build their terminal in HBG area and start adding runs. The driver was also told that most linehaul runs now are over-nighters, nothing home-daily as of yet. I've been seeing SAIA doubles more and more lately heading back and forth from Pittsburgh area / Ohio and HBG / Carlisle.

The company seems to be marketing fairly aggressive. Saw a billboard in North Jersey. On rte3 by the stadium. Announcing the company is in town. Most trucking billboards I have seen are recruiting for drivers

Hmmmm. Interesting. Saw one of the office guys on my way in the other day. He thought if someone left for the competition there was no returning. Maybe it is a case by case thing

Upper management extended their arm told him he could return if he didn't like it he just made it under the line. The new company policy is two months you can return at same rate and same seniority

I knew policy was 1 year. Thinking that was medical, relocation, or for non ltl company. Guess things have to change with the times.

To be welcome back also depends on how you leave. Do it the right way with notice and we're a good employee and they take you back.

Any news on expansion into. Charleston,West
Virginia. Heard a rumor SAIA would be sharing dock space with another company.

ODFL has some extra dock space in the Charleston area with office space. They used to share it with Central Transport. CT moved into the vacated yellow terminal after the YRC merger. The space with OD has been vacant ever since. Around 20 doors I think. It's an old building. I think Pitt-Ohio opened it in the 80s before relocating to their current spot.

We've needed a terminal in Charleston for a long time now. The Ohio terminals go as far as the state line and even that is a stretch for them. Charleston would be a good location for a breakbulk to service the new NE terminals.

Just an FYI concerning Saia's Baltimore terminal

I drove by and saw that Saia's breaking ground on the refurbishment of the "Baltimore" terminal. It's actually located in Laurel, Md. which is located right between Baltimore, Md. and Washington D.C.. The terminal that's being redone is the old, old Roadway break-bulk terminal ( it was last used by Roadway as a satellite terminal) it's located just off of Route 1 in the city limits of Laurel. If I remember right it has about 50 to maybe 60 doors and a very large lot, the shop was torn down a few years ago and the property has been vacant for quite a few years, maybe a decade or more. The purchase of this property by Saia was confirmed to me by a Laurel city council person.

If you search Staggers Rd. Laurel, Md on Bing Maps you can see the aerial and street view of the property. Again the shop has been torn down from when these pics were taken.
