SAIA | Saia has lost overall 100+ driver

What else would be the reason?
I really think we need to realize this industry is heading in an automated direction. You can get pissed about the cameras and run to another company and all you have done is kick the can down the road and given up any tenure you had with the company because you want to lay on your back and kick and scream that the cameras are not fair.. I don't care what other companies tell you , driver facing cameras are gonna be the norm . Companies are and will do what they have to do to protect themselves. And believe it or not the cameras may exonerate your own ass.

I work for a company that has front facing cameras and have no problem with them. I believe that they are enough to show who was at fault and who wasn't. Has for the driver facing cameras, I can't for the life of me understand why a company or insurance company for that matter would want to throw their driver and themselves under the bus with evidence that may or may not contradict what the front facing camera may show.

Nowadays litigation doesnt stop with the company, lawyers want to know what the driver was doing, they go after maintenance records, was there a safety recall on equipment the company didnt address, so on and so on. The driver is going to come into question no matter what. And anything that can help exonerate me as a driver , im all for.

If the driver facing camera saves me from a civil lawsuit because i was accused of being distracted, how you gonna prove you were not distracted with a forward facing camera ?

A friend was involved in a crash. His truck had front and driver facing cameras. A car Tboned him. The ladies lawyer said the truck was traveling to slow through the intersection. His company had the video analyzed gram by frame. Turned out she was speeding approximately 25 mph over the posted speed limit.....ENTERING A INTERSECTION WHILE RUNNING A RED LIGHT. Talk about saving your butt. And yes, the driver facing camera proved the driver tried to avoid impact. Case closed. She bought herself a truck.

Now do i think Saia is being overzealous with the coaching ? Absolutely, and i think this is their bugaboo as far as keeping and attracting drivers.

I don't think the main issue is the cameras themselves, but some of the procedures and policies that have been put in place because of cameras.

Seasoned veteran drivers, with clean safety records, don't need a pencil pushing middle Manager to tell them how to drive or coaching to any extent. Those folks have no real world experience, and therefore garner no respect. They are like bottom feeders.

Same story different day for Saia: it's all about how you treat people. Not compensation, but with regard to respect and dignity.

In reguards to respect and dignity, if you had someone driving for you with say .... 25, 30 years experience and had their first accident that was determined to be their fault due to distracted driving and cost your company a large settlement, are you not as a company owner gonna address this with the driver ? Or you just gonna chalk it up to dumb luck ?

SAIA has really dialed back the way they do coaching. Our new V.P. (Cory T.) has said they will stop making us sign the coaching session forms. Only serious violations will have to be signed. Go onto lytx off the employee portal and notice coaching sessions being stated as resolved that you never even knew about. Nothing will ever be said unless you continue the same bad behavior over and over. They are not trying to fire anyone. They are trying to change bad behavior. Things are getting much better.

Buck is really hung up on this respect and dignity issue. They are not an issue for me. Not sure what she's talking about. Yes, Buck is a woman for those that are new to the board. She has an axe to grind and is a former employee.

Sometimes people want to focus on other peoples faults while ignoring their own.

My gosh, here is train missing the point (again). This is a numbers game.

The numbers show that Saia is losing drivers at a rate higher than other LTL carriers. They also show that Saia is having to toss out $15000 sign on bonuses in order to attract drivers. And even then, having difficulty filling positions. It's the company culture that Saia has cultivated over the years that has put the company in this position. So now, they hate having to amend their policies and procedures only to play defense and hope that the driver exodus slows. They are (finally) having an epiphany of sorts in discovering that, if you treat people right, they will stay. What a concept!

And train, I'll say it again...don't get personal.

I get your point just fine. Look, Buck respect and dignity are something perhaps one man lost in your lawsuit against the company. That was one man that treated you with disrespect. Everyone gets bad apples. Don't label this company by the behavior of one man. He doesn't represent the company as a whole. Your bitter. I understand that. You won your case so move on. Cameras in the trucks have nothing to do with respect and dignity. Numbers game? Really? How in the hell do you know the numbers? Your not in HR or even part of this company. You go by what's said on these boards by a bunch of disgruntled drivers. Get a grip on yourself and move on girl. Some policies always evolve in time. They already have. Cell phone and Bluetooth will not. When phone records are requested in discovery through litigation you can't tell whether your on a Bluetooth or not. And even if you could it wouldn't matter. Your still on the Damn phone when you should be focused on driving. I've posted link after link on how dangerous Bluetooths are. Just because they are legal doesn't mean ::shit:: in a million dollar lawsuit. Where did you get your law degree Buck. Have you no common sense? Bluetooth usage is the biggest complaint from drivers. They won't amend that. They have stopped nitpicking by understanding it hurts driver retention. This company will fine tune this machine and this sleeping giant will come alive. It's only a matter of time. Don't hate Buck. Congratulate!!! It's never been a matter of trusting the drivers to do their job. It's about realizing that no one is perfect and finding a way to correct bad behavior that we all have. Stop the damn respect and dignity ::shit:: Buck. Your making yourself look like a bitter fool. Again, move on.

Train...Saia is a publicly traded company. All of your financials are public knowledge. And I am on the road a great deal more than you are. So, I hear chatter from a lot of different angles and companies.

My point is that there is a great opportunity it's here. Whether or not you or anyone else on their high horse will see it and act on it is completely up to you. Every company has drivers that, from time to time, operate unsafely. Cost of doing business.

And as this old farm girl can tell you, it only takes one bad apple to ruin the barrel. It's your analogy, I just finished it for you. Thanks

And at the same time, if the forward facing camera shows that it was the other drivers fault, let them try to prove you were distracted. Why offer up evidence saying otherwise? I guess it's all a matter of opinion, with mine being that a forward facing camera would be enough evidence for me....

The problem is we can't keep these young bucks off their cell phones. They are truly addicted. From Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to texting they can't put their phones away. It's like it's part of their body. Like an arm or a leg. We have to babysit them and we need proof to terminate them when they continue with this illegal and irresponsible behavior. They ruin it for all the guys that play by the rules. This is just the sad reality.

Yeah you would think that there would be technology that could disable the phone if the truck was moving or if the phone was within so many feet of the truck. I think I could deal with that a little more than being scrutinized for every little thing I do....

I'm not kidding you man. Many of our drivers are just like my kids. Their cell phones are like a body appendage. The difference is they are not driving a commercial vehicle that can take out families with distracted driving and leave the company on the hook. This is a complicated issue with no easy answers.

I actually had one of our drivers show me a video he shot from his cell phone of one of his friends on a motorcycle doing a wheelie going 60mph down the freeway right beside him. I said "cool" and just walked away shaking my head. And yes he was in a company truck.

Good thing he was not an OD driver, BillyLo would be on him like a chicken on a junebug.
