Trucking Companies Climb on Expected Demand for Harvey Cleanup

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/trucking-companies-climb-expected-demand-harvey-cleanup

"The cost to hire a flatbed truck, which can carry in equipment and haul out debris, could climb as much as 15%, said Josh Brogan, who specializes in logistics for consulting firm A.T. Kearney. That expected jump and increases of perhaps 10% for other types of trucking services will ripple through the industry nationwide, he said

“There’s going to be a shortage of trucking equipment for a while and that’s going to drive up prices across the country and also drive up prices locally to a greater extent,” Brogan said."

"Commercial vehicle inspectors across North America will key in on brake compliance on Sept. 7 for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Day.

Inspectors will be looking for out-of-adjustment brakes, along with brake system and antilock braking system violations. CVSA says the goal of Brake Safety Day is to cut down on crashes caused by poorly maintained brakes."

The problem is most side skirts aren't designed for this purpose, they're more about wind reduction and fuel economy.

In order for the side skirts to provide this type of protection, the design and weight of the supports needed to withstand such a force would probably cancel out any savings in fuel economy IMO.

UPDATE 1-As Harvey gained fury, Home Depot raced to respond

"As the streets began to flood over the weekend, the command center began ordering stores to shut down. But trucks still rolled out of a dedicated warehouse, stocked with hurricane defense and recovery products, located in Baytown, just 30 miles from downtown Houston.

In its response, Home Depot followed a plan honed over many hurricane seasons, which aims to minimize disruptions and ensure that it can continue to deliver essential materials and equipment to the affected areas. It is also designed to allow the retailer to capitalize on a surge in demand for its products once repairs begin.

Before the hurricane season begins each summer, the retailer stocks everything from flashlights to shovels in dedicated centers. It pre-loads trucks so they can leave for stores as soon as a hurricane alert comes from a weather service."
