I'm 27 with 3 years experience at FedEx and 5 years LTL experience 6 years CDL experience. I'm considering a move to UPSF. Currently I work Monday-Friday night starting at 1930 and getting off around 0800. I make roughly $2k a week before tax. The big reason I'm considering changing carriers is mainly due to the poor health insurance. We had our first kid 2 years ago and had to pay over $10k in medical expenses. We are wanting to have more but are looking for better health insurance. I realize I'll take a 20 cent pay cut going to UPSF but from what I read on the health insurance it is far better. This year we already maxed out our FSA from regular doctor visits. Where the job listing is just happens to be within a half-hour of where most of my family lives so that's a pretty huge bonus considering I moved away to get started in trucking and have never found a job closer back (we live 8 hours away from my family and 6 hours away from my wife's).

I noticed one job listing for a Full-Time Road Driver working Sunrise shift (0600-1200) which I assume would mean my start time is somewhere in that range. What should I expect? Currently I drive 265 miles to a hub then sit for 2 hours getting paid delay then turn around and come back. I've read that UPSF requires dock work which I could handle especially if it is truly a day run which leads to my next question.

Why is there a opening to fill a day run with someone off the streets? At FedEx you have to work many years out of the same center/yard to get a day run.

Are layoffs common over the winter months?

I've been reading many reviews from (ex)employees off of job listing sites and there are a significant number who only like the job for the paycheck due to poor management and according to some unethical behavior from management towards driver (discrimination, yelling, lack of respect towards drivers, etc.) is any of this true?

Is there something I'm not noticing that stands out to any of you on these types of job openings?

I also noticed Sleeper opportunities are available can someone explain what that would entail?

Thanks for your responses in advance.

You'll not make that here starting out. I'm at 15+ years and make about $2100

I realize that. It's closer to family for me which is not possible with FedEx. I'm mainly considering it for the health insurance though. Here at FedEx ours goes up every single year for a high deductible plan.

AT 27, will be the smartest thing you ever done for your family. Your forgetting the other big deal PENSION. I started with the teamsters at 21, worked my first job for 11 years.(left that one for easier work) They bought out my pension already collecting that one at 41. I have 3 kids my wife had c section all three, my total bill each time was 100 dollars. Dental is top notch 2 kids braces 0 dollars. fillings, crowns 0, etc etc. Is the union perfect, nope but its the best deal out there hands down. Don't listen to haters and go get all the info for yourself and make a family decision.

Our insurance is pretty dang good level at about $35 a week our pension is also fully insured and not part of the central states. Alot of BS but just roll with it and laugh you'll be fine. I

I have had 1 knee replaced. Total out of pocket expense about 600.00. Neck C2 thru C-5 fused in my neck with a metal plate. Total out of pocket about 400.00. The difference was physical therapy for the knee. Dental & eye outstanding. Right now you pay nothing each week with YRC or ABF. That will change but the excellent coverage will last for a long time. And, being under a CBA can be a huge advantage over a non-union 80 bucks a week for family coverage. You will pay about 60 bucks a month in dues. But that beats 80 bucks a week for family coverage. The pension fund. Who knows how that will end up. But a wife & 1 child & more to follow, you will be, money wise so far ahead with union backed medical coverage you would be stupid not to try it. And during the life of the contract, they can't change your benefits or how much you pay them for it. In a non-union employer, they can raise your weekly payments & lessen your coverage & there is nothing you can do about it, other than quitting. Look very close @ what the benefits are from each potential employer. Good luck. von.
