XPO | Message for Corporate. Re: P&D Overtime

It's getting frustrating with all the attrition from drivers quitting, retiring or the occasional firing, our driver count is down every year meaning less vacation time available for those of us left (especially those of us in the middle or bottom seniority wise). Drivers are not being replaced at the same rate they are leaving.
So true and for a guy like myself, who one day hopes his seniority will carry him to a place where he can get a better start time, it ain't happening if guys aren't brought in at the same rate guys leave. Myself and many other drivers in the 8-15 yr range have been stuck at the same start time and stuck on the outbound dock.

Yup, you get pushed up by more guys below you rather than pulled up by less above you. Got the same thing here.

At my barn we could have 3 guys retire and they would be replaced with dock works. As far as I remember we have one that I haven't seen drive a truck outside the Fence since I been here. The other 2 spend over half there day on the dock. So it is no surprise no ones coming in at the bottom we are paying driver wage for dock work.

Same for me. On linehaul I'm 8 out of 10. My city start time should I bid it would be 10am. If I were to bid flex, which I wouldn't, I would be #1 (and we all know what that means!). So that's what I've got to show for the last 13 years of my life at work. Pretty poor I'll say and if the right opportunity presented itself, I'd be outta here for sure.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of miles are you running as #8 versus maybe the #2 or 3 guy?

(How many more miles would you be running at those higher spots?)

We only run three fac's. 139 miles-163 miles, so no big difference in miles. Via's are usually run by the senior guys but do get passed down. My mileage would not be much different unless I was #1 to a fac.

It's amazing the way the downsides have even more downsides to them. Which leads to even more people leaving and it being that much worse for those that remain.

As it seems many have mentioned. Inbound being replaced with dockhands. Line haul runs being replaced with vans. You are never going to hold anything better. You are lucky to still hold what you have. And if not for so many leaving, you wouldn't even be holding onto that.

It's hard to hired drivers right now. It seems to me if we get rid of/move ot, it will be near impossible to hire new blood. We will be just another carrier, nothing to differentiate us from the rest. If the plan is to replace us with contractors, then I guess the company is in a race to the bottom.

Why is this hard to grasp. You all need to look at it this way. If you owned this company what would you do to say money and make this place more profitable? Would you pay 100 bucks for someone to mow you grass when someone else would do it for 75. So why would XPO keep paying a driver to work the dock for 6-8hrs a day when they can pay someone 7-8 buck less per hour to do the same job.

The OT is not the reason we can't get drivers.
1. no one wants to do this job anymore.
2. quality of life (ie: working hours) for some people money isn't every thing
3. the BS that goes on here and at other LTL carriers.
4. we have nothing to attract exp. driver away from there current job.

I believe that if XPO offered something like company fully paid benefits we would have a line out the door we would even get guys from FedEx and OD. They would even have to give us a raise if they did that and some might even agree a $.50 pay cut to get it. We can't get driver because we have nothing better to offer then any other company out there.

I do agree with most of what you posted here. The only point you have to remember pay rates must continue to have cost of living adjustments going forward . So yes fully paid health insurance would be an attractant but if pay fell far behind the competition and I stress "far" it wouldn't be effective.

I agree that the company needs to do something to attract new blood. My barn is completing with R&L and LandAir. Both are offering $21 to start. Both don't work the dock as us. The Northeast is also completing to keep drivers too. I know of ten drivers that left to go work for Walmart. Which has a worse quality of life then us. They are out 5 days, home 2.

IMO, the reason we can't attract quality, experienced drivers is due mostly to word of mouth. Our guys don't have a lot to be proud of here, other than a check. And we gossip about it......incessantly. Our reputation preceeds us. We need something that sets us apart from other lines, but that'll never happen.

When people talk about wanting to work here, they get warned off. And asked if they would give a reference where ever they land. That they should keep in touch. Because staying here might not be an option for very long.
