We recently had a driver cited by the state police for having his chains hooked straight pull vs cross hooked. I have also been questioned at road stops as to why I have chains straight hooked . According to the State police this is not correct. I always tell them that I am following company procedure when questioned . This has always been policy as far back as I can remember and continues to be under Xpo. Has anyone heard differently? I am seeing new guys come through at barn that are cross hooking. I asked are TM and he says he has not heard of any changes.
I don't think we have a safety supervisor in our region any longer but I would like to ask one if we ever get one or if you have one in your area if you could ask for us.

We had a regional safety manger his man is Pat I don't recall his last name.
What would the cop say to someone that has a dolly with only one chain on it???
 
I always hook straight because I have not been told to different when driving company equipment. When pulling my own personal trailers I cross hook as per state regulations.
The driver that was cited will pay the fine for following company procedure ?

I believe years ago when we were CCX they told us if the 2 chains were crossed it would lead to the possibility of the kite overturning in the event of a dissconect at highway speeds. The company wanted a straight pull in that event.

I have never seen a single chain set up but I heard some do have that set up. I know that uncrossed chains are are supposedly illegal in Nj and drivers were fined for it but the company( Con-way ) at the time fought it.

I cross chains on my personal receiver hitch hooked trailers in this state it's still required.

Have your Safety people contact the State Police Commander & hash it out. Come to some kind of understanding. Then the word is passed down to those on the streets. Maybe less hassle. Maybe not. von.

I've had, I don't know how many dollies with chains that are only a foot long can barely reach the loop
 
These dolly chains are designed for straight pull. They are not long enough to be crossed like other dollies that have the chains mounted way back on the frame. And your right.. in event of a disconnect, the cross chains will torque and cause a rollover, whereas if it disconnects with straight chains, it just drops down even.
 
The regulations treat the kite as a "full trailer" and, like bumper pull trailers, they expect the chains to be crossed. If there is only one chain, it must be hooked to the left side. This doesn't matter, of course, with a single loop because it makes no difference.

Have the company fight the ticket if they expect you to hang them straight.

Can you show us the reg on that because I didn't find anywhere in the regs that say the chains must be cross or about the one chain on the left side
 
I can't remember exactly where it was in the reg, I looked it up when I first went to work at FedEx 6 years ago and didn't exactly bookmark it.
