Driver out of fortwayne drop a trailer at mm 10 on interstate 40 west last night. He was driving 17 series tractor with 25 thousand on trailer came out of Charlotte nc which is about 2 1/2 hours later. Just a heads up check your jaws on the fifth wheels of these and all tractors. Let's be safe.the driver had no injury and no one else was involved thank goodness

Regardless of the fifth wheel maker, anyone who doesn't check to see that the handle is in all the way, no air between fifth wheel top and the trailer king pin plate, and check to see that jaws are closed (with a flashlight) is crazy and asking for trouble.

I once pulled one from Atl to Kings Mnt. with king pin sitting on top of the jaws, why it didn't jump off, I'll never know.
Guess who was the dumbass that did the pretrip?

You got lucky. That could have easily been your last trip for that company. And much worse, you could be living with that fact that your trailer took out an innocent family when it came unhooked.
I hope that was a wake-up call for a quality pre-trip from that day forward.

We have a policy where I work that the dolly legs should not be cranked all the way down to the ground. They should be left 1" or so up off the concrete pad. That allows the fifth wheel to lift the legs off the ground when hooking, and eliminates any chance of a high hook.
*We do have to send out reminders every so often though.
