Trump Signs Executive Order Expanding Health Care Options for Associations

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/trum...er-expanding-health-care-options-associations

"President Donald Trump signed an executive order Oct. 12 at an event attended by trucking industry executives that will allow small-business owners more health care options by enabling them to purchase insurance that does not fall under the aegis of the Affordable Care Act.

The order instructs three Cabinet departments — Health and Human Services, Treasury and Labor — to rewrite federal regulations for association health plans, in which similar small businesses form an association to broker health benefits. Trump said the executive order will create additional options for employers to buy the health plans their workers want."

Scott Mugno Is the ‘Brain Coach’ to FedEx’s Championship Drivers

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/scott-mugno-brain-coach-fedexs-championship-drivers

“At my core, I’m a safety professional. At my core, I’m about safety and I want to grow safety,” Mugno said. “Am I proud of where team FedEx is, what it’s doing … yes. But, you know what I’m really proud of is not the 170-some-odd champions we brought to NTDC this year. I’m prouder of the number below that, where I had over 1,000, 2,000 champions compete and qualify for state championships. What does that mean. That means they were accident-free for a year just to get there. That’s the number that makes me happy. That’s the number that makes me proud.”

Freight rates poised for a big surge

http://trucker.com/business/freight-rates-poised-big-surge

"He said private fleets and third-party logistics (3PL) firms are “as bullish as we’ve ever heard,” with rate increases possibly reaching as high as 15%."

“Motor carriers began to offer shippers a proposition: ‘We can lock you into a 2% to 3% rate increase now or you can deal with rates when the market further tightens once the ELD mandate is implemented in late 2017 and early 2018,’” Larkin said. “That seemed to be generating some modest level of positive traction.”

Are you ready for blockchain technology?
It'll come to trucking soon because the system can save money and time, while keeping motor carriers and their drivers out of trouble.

http://fleetowner.com/technology/are-you-ready-blockchain-technology

"In short, a blockchain is a distributed database that is updated in real time, stored in decentralized locations and easy to monitor. It has a level of security that insures that no person can cover up a mistake by changing a database entry, because, in a sense, everyone is watching. Blockchains are ledgers that are open to anyone in a transaction. In transportation, it might include a manufacturer, customs agents, shippers, government regulators, carrier and drivers. A chain may even go back as far as the raw materials used to produce goods."

"Think of something as simple as a DVCR (Driver Vehicle Condition Report) that a driver populates before and after the completion of a trip. Currently this is a very paper intensive process that should convey the condition of transportation equipment to operations, safety and maintenance. If automated and incorporated into a blockchain, all of the inspection and maintenance information could travel with the equipment throughout its lifecycle. Verification of the inspections, maintenance performance records and recall information could all be part of this blockchain. It ultimately simplifies the asset management and utilization task."

What in the world do you call a hat like that? Besides Big Dave’s hat.

XPO Logistics to Hire 20% More Seasonal Staff

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/xpo-logistics-hire-20-more-seasonal-staff

"XPO will be competing with FedEx Corp. and UPS Inc. to hire the employees to sort and move packages. Combined, FedEx and UPS have said they are looking to hire nearly 150,000 workers for the season.

But XPO has an added burden of finding workers with the muscle to lift durable goods such as refrigerators, ovens and wide screen TVs — goods that other package firms don’t always handle."

“In addition to the sheer lack of drivers, fleets are also suffering from a lack of qualified drivers, which amplifies the effects of the shortage on carriers,” Costello said...

"...The company has received more than 100,000 applications this year, but has only been able to bring on board about 2.7% of those drivers."

That fellow,Leathers from Werner, and Costello from the ATA,should spend a month on the road with one of his drivers, and see first hand the daily issues drivers deal with. Then ask themselves if they now understand why driver retention, and new hires are hard to find.
Earnings below 50,000 to start, and some below 40,000
Poor benefits
Too many strings attached to earnings potential
Not treated with respect by shippers, consignee, company, and general public.
High cost of living on the road: showers, food, etc.
Not compensated for most on duty time. ( Waiting to load,or unload.)
Pushed to the limit to make appts.
Very limited parking for off duty time.
Basically forced to eat unhealthy because most truckstops feature only fast food.
And yes. The ATA backing of deregulation in the 80's, has helped to create this situation.
Did I miss anything?
