I've read here and elsewhere. The linehaul network is reporting ( and has been for awhile ) that dockworkers are being designated to call the shots in sectors.

Does anyone have specific details? Is this some type of program where elite dockworkers are selected after a rigorous qualification process? Is this being done due to the lack of qualified candidates for vacant management/supervisor positions?

Also told this is spreading - if drivers have a trainer for example , dockworkers have a trainer. Reportedly , this is happening at multiple locations.

I have to ask how is that any different then a driver training to be a lead man or training to become a boss. I thinks it better to promote from within. I always found a boss that did the job is usually a better boss.
We are getting more and more of them and some have no clue and are ****ing up more freight.

The whole place is in a slow decline.

Trucks are getting older and more worn and beaten up everyday. Trailers are getting tore up more and more from the front bulkheads being jammed with fifth-wheel plates to the tires being dragged leaving flat spots. The landing gears are skipping gears or the handles rusting out.

Everything is getting caked more and more with dirt, dust, scratches.

People don’t pre-trip or post-trip, they don’t clean windows/mirrors.

I can’t wait to leave this place behind.

Very sad from what we were to this. The maintenance guys are doing the best they can under very tight budget constraints. This is not substainable in the long run.

Your comments are welcome but , can someone confirm this is happening and provide details?

Sure it’s happening. Just look around if you go to any FACs and see someone in a regular black/red uniform running a sector. It’s likely a dockworker. I know of at least 4 different terminals that this has happened at in the past year and is still happening.

Why hire someone and pay them $50k +/- $10k when you can let your dockworker do it. 99% of them would hop on it simply because they aren’t glued to a forklift all night/day.

I know people think these FOSs don’t make much but they’re making just around $60k from what I understand. That’s not bad considering you don’t do much actual work and don’t really do much managing except get your breakers broke. Get a couple guys out before about 3am and get some “points” for your bonus.

Thank you. This is for those that monitor these boards and may be in a bubble.

Since XPO Logistics took over news is dead. Now it's mostly gossip and hearsay. Those in lower management pay attention: you are in the same boat as drivers. Dockworkers are cheaper. Period. It doesn't matter how much inexperience and lack of knowledge costs on the backend.

Some people don't know what to watch out for until you tell them.

Communication is non existent, even management at the local level is in the dark for the most part.

It’s true, we now have a “dock boss” at our place. Went through training for a week and now he trains new hires and such.

You guy's don't even know the half of it.
But from I'm told this region has gotten some new Tractors and Trailers. I was told the trailers are crap. But the tractor seem to be making people happy. So it's all good.

The SC over here has had a dock worker as a boss for a few Year's. I thought that was the norm. He was trained by some good people, so he actually knows what his doing. His downfall is, His young so many don't respect him.

XCA HAS FORMER DOCK WORKERS AS FOS STEP-UPS. FAC/SECTOR RUNS LIKE A WELL OILED MACHINE,NORMALLY. THESE TWO ARE MID 20'S, BUT HAVE THEIR ACT. TOGETHER. RESPECTED

XCA is hardly a good comparison to somewhere like XGH or XCW. XCA doesn’t get as many breakers, or drivers as the other two mentioned.

In Coldwater and Indy , when lifts are in short supply , dockworkers taking up lifts for riding on instead of using lifts to work , reportedly.

Watched 3 standing in the middle of the dock, leaning on brooms, laughing.

It's a different company....that's for sure.

Is this the company's fault or the workers fault?

Yes. People will do what you allow them to do. Could most things that are wrong be fixed? Who knows?

What the point is ( and has been for awhile ) is willfully ignoring problem people who exploit the system XPO has - You are a big boy , this is your job , go do it.

Most understand that management should , SHOULD discipline , correct , and/or fire those that don't follow the simple rule above. But the whole thing has slid so far to the wrong side and allowed to go for so long that it would be VERY difficult to fix. Some people have spent an entire career of NOT doing their job. Some people in management have spent their entire career covering up and hiding people that do not produce like their coworkers.

This is all being ignored while the issue grows. It's being made worse as good ( productive people ) leave through retirement or other employment. Leaving only the worse options as your go-to people.

The numbers matter. The numbers are great. These are things that don't show up in the numbers - now. In time though , if the very foundation of the company keeps crumbling , what will things look like in 5 to 10 years?
