Should this be a safety concern that would require a policy change?

Yes they can. Can’t force you to drive tired.
392.3. Be able to prove why you did that made you so tired you had to mark off because of being to tired. 392.3 does work, but back up your decision with a reasonable argument. Easy to bring in 'I have been sick' note from the doctor. A to tired to drive note, good luck. von.

After going back and re-reading the original poster’s comments, he said he wanted a 24 hr notice...LMAO!! That’s basically saying he didn’t want to do it without saying it, especially in our industry!! There’s a danger with everything we do, that’s why we’re considered professionals and also why we’re paid what we are.

I would think the driver who made this thread that pertains to safety would want advice from actual safe drivers, with your latest record that leaves you out.

Would cutting hay and drinking beer, putting up fences all day count?

I worked for Yellow in Kansas City as a road driver at one time. If I called off every time they called me when I was tired I would have been broke. It’s like they had a sensor on my pillow. Anytime my head hit it the phone would ring. Don’t miss them at all.

I did file a complaint through the alert line, to try and get some sort of resolution. Talking to management hasn't worked. As a matter of fact, I got snapped at for voicing my concerns of not being to sleep that day because I had already slept all night.. Anyway, I called today to see what time I needed to be there for my city run, to be told I wasn't needed today and to enjoy my day off. So now I feel I am being retaliated against.

It's been well over a week. Any progress? If you were not contacted (remaining anonymous?), after 5 business days you should have an official response on the alert line.

So many questions... Not the least of which apply to actual policy vs perceived policy.

On a related note, Corporate seems to be serious enough about safety to put a full page ad on the back page of section A in last week's monday edition of USA Today.

Duh...they’ll do almost anything in an attempt to convince Congress and the public that we’re safe enough to pull the 33 footers they’ve been trying so desperately to get passed. Why do you think we have the collision mitigation systems and the forward facing cameras...and rumored to soon be two more “outside the cab” rear facing side cameras to cover our “blind spots”??

They’ve taken a page right out of Congress’s playbook...if you want to get something past the people, do it in the name of “safety”...afterall, who doesn’t want to remain “safe”??

Yes. But you did not protect your primary job of driving. You lose. Case dismissed. There is a actual case that went before a ALJ & the driver lost his argument & his job. von.

Congress is not stupid, none of the stuff you mentioned will stop accidents, you of all people should know this. All the cameras and other junk is for the companies liability.

Congress is bought and sold. No intelligence required. And if you don't get that, you're naive at best and unbelievably stupid at worst. End of story. Go sit in the corner with the dunce cap on. No surprise there...

Please don't call someone stupid when you and Red haven't a clue what liability means. It has nothing to do with Congress genius.

3 weeks, Salty...

Not to be a pest, but I think some follow up info is in order. What happened? ANY RESOLUTION?

I can't believe there was no response from the alert line. That is highly unlikely. :nono h4h:

Is it too much to ask for the result? :grumpy:

I never claimed any of the aforementioned would stop accidents, those are your words...although the numbers suggest they do. The “cameras and other junk”, as you called them, are in place to appease Congress in exchange for the passing of 33 foot pups, period!! You obviously haven’t been keeping up with the 33 foot pup debates...

As for the aforementioned being for “the company’s liability” as you claimed, you obviously weren’t around back in the AF days when our “red racers” were outfitted with “little black boxes” in an attempt to exonerate the drivers/company during accidents...turns out those “little black boxes” became a liability all right, costing AF hundreds of millions if not billions when they were forced to settled out of court!! Those little black boxes didn’t last long and they were removed from our equipment!!

Red, back in the late 50s, early 60s RTL aquired several outfits that ran the boxes, called Tachograph.
They ran a paper 24hr disc that recorded speed, rpm, and stop times, after these units were put in service RTL
never ran a disc in one as I recall.
They claimed the disc in court could be more harmful than good.
Guess these were similar to your "black box"
