XPO | Dockworkers NOW , Dockworkers in the FUTURE , Dockworkers FOREVER!!!

Watched 3 standing in the middle of the dock, leaning on brooms, laughing.

It's a different company....that's for sure.
That is nothing new. Been going on for many years, worse now? Maybe. One day last week, my fos at the fac argued with me about putting up the safestack bars in a trailer I was going to use but ended up not using. I said ok, my inbound can wait a few more minutes for their freight. Keep in mind the later I leave, the more traffic etc. I will run into on the way home. Petty? I guess. Just frustrating as you point out others standing around doing nothing.

Sounds like the zoo. Worry about stupid things and not worrying about getting freight moved.

Just make sure you say the same thing to driver sleeping on the side of the road, hiding in there trucks/bathroom and just plan not doing there job. We can point to a lot of thing that will delay freight and it all comes down to workers just f-ing off.

I’m ok with taking a break before, during or after the fac, off the clock and reasonable. As you said, the freights gotta move. Funny though, we all know what the circle of life is, right? Used to be we would always get out on time to the fac’s On Monday night. Not so much anymore. And our tm says we aren’t short handed? Then why does this happen? Do the city drivers get out on time Monday morning? It is what it is, and I’ll do whatever, but really. WTF?

There a difference between taking you break and sleeping. I had a via driver leave my barn 1hr before and going to the same FAC. When I got to the FAC that driver was not there I do remember seeing 3 trucks sitting along side the road on my way there. That driver arrived 2hr after I got there and what was done??? Nothing. Total was about 3hrs for that driver
I asked our TM to cancel the 1hr early start time on Monday because we still get out on the same time. You would think having driver getting out 1hr early on Monday would mean your loads would close earlier but that not the case they are closing at the same time.

Are the dockworkers you see now the next generation of drivers? FOS's?TM's?

If XPO can't find people to fill the openings logic dictates that you establish a " farm system " or " minor league " and groom from within.

Good ideas and habits can be handed down to the next generation. Like best practices and standard operating procedures , good ideas and habits help establish a winning culture.

XPO Logistics could run the risk of losing experience and practices that are handed down and passed by word of mouth and/or demonstrating from one person to the next. All that will be left is someone telling you to do what they say - not because they have experienced this first hand but because their title says they are in charge and a degree trumps experience.

We just hired a new fos. Brand new. No fmt program that I know of anymore. We have plenty of dock workers to choose from to promote, some even sort of qualified. Don’t know if anyone wanted it or what. I have seen dock workers run a sector at several fac’s, but only one promoted to fos status and he was laid off soon after his “promotion”.

Promoted and then laid off.

Wow. XPO Logistics in a nutshell.

That's happening with quite a lot of frequency .
The company has been on a firing spree as of lately firing anyone that been around awhile. Too much vacation , higher pay rate.... not a good time.
Anyone with time with this company should watch their back for now particularly management. It's know wonder new people come on and quit soon after.

That might be happening at the shops that voted for the union, but it's not happening around me.

It's been happening throughout our region. Glad it's not going on in your area. That's a positive thing.
They only fired our regional manager and TM following the vote.
I know the managers at xrq, xwc,xyh and Seaford ,De , Vineland ,Nj. have either been quit or been fired within the last year. All them had nothing's to do with the union.
What I here from the local management and other sources there is a ton of TM positions open nationwide. I taking the see some to of postings on the company site.

Does anyone know the ratio for dockworkers to drivers that XPO is shooting for?

What is the ratio at OD? FedEx? AND? YRC? UPS Freight? R+L? Saia? You get the point.

Where does XPO Logistics stand in comparison?

Your comments are welcome but , can someone confirm this is happening and provide details?
Well I'm not exactly sure where in the northeast the trailers are PM serviced, but we had one with a new inspection sticker on it within last 30 days. Here's what we found on this freshly inspected trailer.
1. Fresh newly installed brakes
2. All D.O.T. items fully functional and working
Now the Bad (devil is in the details)
1. Hole in the floor - should have been repaired before put back in service
2. Rollers on the door completely missing and door not in good working order
Now before anyone leads to conclusions, I guess it could be possible that this was normal wear, but what are the chances within 30 days both problems occurred? In my opinion it appears either the shop is very hasty to turn equipment out or ( and I would hope this is not the case) bean counters have told the shops to cut cost at ALL Costs!

On some level, I've seen it at both NCH and NOF, didn't really think much of it, just another pair of eyes for the sector supervisor not to miss anything. Mainly at doors with heavy loading. Not sure if those guys actually have a "title".
