FedEx Freight | "C" Suffix Pups

They Call Me CF, Eh

I was down at SEFL's yard in Independence, KY the other day. FedEx is just the other side of the fence there. I saw a bunch of new P40000 series pups that had the letter C affixed after the unit number. Eg: P42567C

Anyone have any idea what it means? I thought maybe "composite" for the smooth walls, but I couldn't exactly walk over and see for myself.

It troubles me greatly to post this, but below is the 1st "C" designated pup I've seen. Great potential and versatility, as a stand alone system, as well as being compatible with existing decking bars, straps, etc. BUT, without proper instruction & care, these things will be destroyed.

Looks as bad as the one that came through my center.

Unfortunately it won't take long. When we first merged with Watkins their '53 vans with similar system were in great shape. It only took a couple of weeks before they were twisted and mangled to the point of usefulness.

How unfortunate. Captive bars are a brilliant idea. A number of Speedy's newer trailers have them, Estes newer trailers have them and even Holland is starting to get some. I personally think they're great, not just for decking but for overall load security. It's a shame they get trashed by the careless so easily.

We had a bunch at NEMF - "K beams" . Someone obviously struggled with spelling. Anyway, the bars quickly got destroyed. These are great, in theory...

You mean...’destroyed’ like the bottom pallet of that double-stack in the background of the photo

At SEFL the "F" designation stands for "fixed" bars. It's the same system.

Another great innovation embraced by those that have never set foot on the dock.
Part of the problem with captive bars is that some people use the forklifts to move them, which invariably damages the bars. Even if you don't have the proper "tool", which is basically a stick with a paddle on one end, a dock hook will suffice.

Stacking isn't new, neither are captive bars. Consolidated Freightways was using them years ago. And I know Viking had some because I hauled one of those once. The track on two of them had been pulled off the wall from someone using a forklift on the bars. The problem isn't people who have never set foot on a dock, it's the dock not being properly trained in the use of the system. Whose fault is that? Usually the TM, who had nothing to do with the ordering of more useful trailers.

I agree with Flyer, watching a 5 minute video is not training, Most people need hands on training, and if you were to see some of the part time help they hire for the dock in CLT------all I have to say is WOW

You hit the nail on the head. Communication/education is such a variable, it can and does range from pretty good to nonexistent... Both before AND after the fact.
And it can vary a lot just from terminal to terminal across the system, as we all know.
