SAIA | Decision making day

I would be careful about installing your own dash cam to CYA. The company could view that as against company policy (installing any equipment that is not factory standard, blah blah) plus it is illegal to have anything in the driver's view on the dash. I understand the rationale, just may not be realistic. Even if you installed your own underneath the existing Saia equipment, it's hard to believe that they would allow that data to be harvested and used against them. After all, it's their equipment that they don't want an "unqualified" person making changes to. Boiled down and simply put, if they want to get rid of you, they will make it happen. The longer you are there, the bigger the file is against you. Law of averages catches up at some point...
I will say that Dash Cams these days are almost undetectable and will fit in the palm of your hand. Lytx would never see them and that's a fact. I know too many guys that use them.

I find it funny that they come up with this clever play on words in regards to camera infractions. The only decision in many cases is does the driver stay or quit. When you put someone on notice that the next time your fired it makes the decision pretty easy.
It's time I disclosed the full story about my one day suspension and why I got so aggravated about it. The rolling stop wasn't a rolling stop or I would have received a ticket. As I approached the stop sign I noticed my brakes dragging due to a slow air leak. I stopped about ten feet behind the stop sign and got out of the truck to investigate. I noticed the glad hand rubber seal was leaking from being pinched in some way. As I was getting an extra one to pop in a police officer pulled up behind me and hit his Red an Blues and wanted to know why I was blocking traffic. I had my flashers on and he knew I had some sort of issue. He checked my license and ask for standard information and as we walked toward the front of the truck to check the plate he ask me how long I would be stuck and I told him just a few minutes. He said fine and told me he would wait behind me for my safety. He was a very polite police officer. I was having a bit of trouble popping out the rubber seal because it was sort of bonded to the glad hand. He walked back and ask how much longer as I was just finishing. He ask me to please hurry because traffic was backing up. As I started to move forward with him right behind me I slowed to get a better view because of the obstructed view I was having and safety said I only slowed to 2 mpg. Keep in mind I had been stopped at that sign for almost 10 minutes. LYTX didn't pick that up!!! Just the 8 second clip. I say I still stopped but the LYTX system showed it didn't zero out my mpg. I say as many other drivers have said that LYTX lags and doesn't actually show zero much of the time. This was petty BS and it just rubbed me the wrong way. If the police officer right behind me didn't find the need to give me a ticket then why in the hell did SAIA punished me and tell me next time I will be terminated. I will stop the rant now because I'm started to get pissed all over. Needless to say that what happens before that 8 second capture is very important. I will be back to later to discuss just how management sees everything in black and white and doesn't want to hear excuses. They are clueless sitting behind that computer screen acting as the judge and executioner. We are worlds apart. As drivers we live in the real world. Where do they live????? In the almost 4 years I have spent here I have never been written up or had an accident. You would think that would mean something. :idunno:

Train, excuse the pun...but you got railed! This is so sad that management can’t take off the blinders and resort back to old fashioned common sense.

Is there any sort of appeals process in place? I assume not. And if I’m correct in that assumption, that’s a problem.

I would stick it right in their face from here on out. I mean seriously...stop and a stop sign and count to 30 before even considering moving that rig. That way you will avoid this situation in the future and THEY can figure out why your bills per hour are down. You reap what you sow; it’s their game and their rules. So play by them and move forward. Again, sorry to hear this is how this went down. What a bunch of crap!

Train I agree, this great company you have had nothing but praise for in your past posts, has done you an injustice.
They should not have cited you for the stop sign violation.
They should have given you a warning for stoping in the middle of the road to change a stupid gladhand gasket.
Why would you think about a small air leak, I've pulled trailers more than a hundred miles with half a gasket,
brakes don't drag and no low air warning.
What would Saia think if some one plowed into your rear, even with 4 ways on, "sorry, I was changing a gladhand"
gasket.
A good ambulance chaser would love that case.

If you woulda done a proper pre trip that wouldnt have happened.
This happened halfway through my shift. I did a proper pre-trip dumb ass. I've been dong this 45 years and I know what the **** I'm doing. Does a blowout of a steer tire mean you didn't do a proper pre-trip? It probably happened when I made a hard right turn. Something's just wear out dumb ass.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said it was small. At the end it became big and I couldn't build enough pressure to move the trailer. Most of it was gone and was torn apart. I should have been clearer. It was also leaking from the hose connection to the glad hand which I was able to tighten with a pair of pliers. Something's just happen on the road for no rhyme or reason. This was one of those days where nothing went right. We all have them here in the real world.

Not so. I’ve had many rubber seals go bad during a trip. You can unhook the gladhand and wipe the rubber grommet with a gloved hand, spray it with wd40, or even spit on the grommet. Sometimes literally anything you do to it will temporarily stop the air leak.
