XPO | 1 year and I'm done!!!

I laugh when I see the new guys complaining about trucks. When I started, Conway bought all trucks with no air conditioning, no power steering, no radios, hand cranks to roll windows up and down. I didnt get an air conditioned truck till i had 22 years in. Quit your whining about trucks, you got it made.
let me guess you didn't have forklift either back then. I not bitching I was driving those types of trucks back in the days. I compared 2 different companies at the same time frame to show how much con-way cared about there drivers.

I've been in the trucking business for about 5 years now just not as a driver. Worked for 2 LTL company's as a supervisor and was good at my job liked it just wanted to get into driving so I did and here I am now!!

3 companies in 5 years and you're ready for number 4 already? I think your expectations might be a little unrealistic for LTL.

Actually, I enjoy the Sterlings, no lane departure or assisted cruise control screaming at you...

There's a pretty simple way to keep the lane departure alert and radar from screaming at you...

...plus less blinding lights on the dash.

I'll give you that one, though. I'm too self-conscious to dance in the seat anymore, with all those lights I may as well be on a stage.

I spent 3 years as a supervisor and just over 2 at another company. I said that eariler. I don't have a unrealistic expectation of the company I just know I can go back to them company if I wanted once I had the exp.

Morning guys and gals. Sitting in my tree stand waiting for big buck to come walking on by figured I had the time to write my opinions of XPO!

So I've been with the company for about 6 months now. I went and got my cdl on my own dime didn't wanna be stuck with a company and owe them anything! That was my choice and I'm happy I did it that way!!!

My first month was about 4 weeks of training. 3 in the city in P&D and 1 in linehaul on overnights. Was pretty good. My trainer was very knowledgeable and helpful. I've been in the trucking business for about 5 years now just not as a driver. Worked for 2 LTL company's as a supervisor and was good at my job liked it just wanted to get into driving so I did and here I am now!!

So I am on overnights and running linehaul into a fac! My center is also a fac. I've ran the last 3 weeks in a row every night most time it's 3/4 nights a week and some hostling. My first thing is this! What is up with the sterlings! I don't get why we are keeping them around. I feel incredibly unsafe when I drive one of them. Just my first thought is why not get some decent tractors and retire these!

Secondly. XPO does not care about your personal life! If they could you'd work 16 hours a day and they wouldn't bat a eye! Before I got hired I said I need 2 days off for a family thing going on. Yeah no problem! Next thing I get told that they would see what they could do! Such bull :::shit:::! I'm getting frustrated as I type. Ha

Third! Fac's don't give a crap on what happens. The supervisors hide in there little shakes clueless of what is going on. Dock workers talk all night and don't do a damn thing! I'm stuck on the fac working dock until almost 6 am and have a 4 hour drive back to the center. :/

Last it seems like no one really knows what management does! Other then hide in the offices and sometimes do something! I have to call at 6 pm every night to see if or where I'm going and some days I don't get home until 11! Like WTF! I suggested maybe sending out texts msgs or them calling us and was told they are way to busy! I've ran bigger areas and centers then these people! They are clowns and don't really know anything! Their are a few who do but not many!

My overall opinion is I make good money! I'm going to stay until I get at least my year in so I have driving experience and I'm gone! I give XPO a C- as a company! I like the drivers I work with but damn does the company get me going some days!

Hope you enjoyed my bitch fest! Have a good weekend!!

Great post Cecil. Nice to hear feedback from other drives on their thoughts of XPO. That's what I like about TB's, because I have been interested in going into ltl. Here's a few things I've learned from yrs of driving.

As far as not getting time off, :::shit::: rolls down hill from seniority standpoint. I hear guys complain a lot about being on call, working a bunch of hrs or not enough. It's just all a part of paying your dues. Also, it can depend on the management you're dealing with locally as far as getting time off.

I've driven Sterlings and still do to this day, as long as they're mechanically sound I'll drive it, slip seating I've gotten pretty numb to driving a lot of different trucks. You get really good at doing your pretrips and postrips. Most large companies I think have a certain amount of older stuff hanging.around.

One thing to keep in mind the grass isn't always greener on the other side. A good majority of these companies are all pretty much the same as far as I can see, just depends on what you want to put up with. Follow all policies and procedures, CYA. Where you going to go back to your previous employers?

Yes, we had forklifts. But they were diesel, and we had to breath fumes all day on the dock from the exhaust. We didnt have safe stack, no plywood, no straps. Sometimes we could find some rope. We were real truckers :)

Stripping a trailer only took 20 minutes without all this ::shit:: in it. Now you are there forever. Fighting broken deck beams. Pulling off 25 straps. Collecting a chest high pile of plywood. And a stack of plastic deck boards. You know all the ::shit:: that is supposed to make our jobs easier and reduce damages. Except if you look at our damages back then and look at our damages now ..... hhhhhmmmmmm. Well, I guess if you sit at a computer all day you can learn to find ways to make it all add up.

And it's not entirely the fault of this horrible system they bought for the trailers. Some blame also rests with the under paid dock hands. Any real warehouse job pays better and is sheltered from the elements. Of course, then you have, lack luster management that sees no point in correcting or even addressing bad behavior. Lucky just to have a body here to do something attitude. But a good deal of the fault is owned by senior drivers that have been robbed of so much and lied to for so long that they just don't care. Ruin stuff on purpose just because " frak this place ".

All we can hope for is a pay off on the promise. Show us the love. More miles. More meet and turns. A healthy raise next year. ( the FedEx here is over a dollar more an hour ) From Detter to present it's been pretty much all been trending for the worse. So, it's just a damn pipe dream. But it's still fun to think about. That things might actually ever get better.

I think you could change the last word in your first sentence from XPO to about ten or twelve different company names and posted it on there board and no one would have blinked an eye. It is the nature of the beast, there are many negatives about working ltl, good thing there are positives that outweigh the negatives. I work for Holland and could write the same letter about my company. Maybe the fact that Holland has hired so many former Conway people in the offices has something to do with the similarities?

And that Holland got bought by a bigger company. There really are a lot of similarities.

Like you say LTL is LTL . The baby boomers are riding off into the sunset. They are getting out of the seat. Opportunities abound. And not just in LTL .

Gentlemen, let us extend every courtesy to our most senior drivers. Some of them started out in this industry shoveling excrement in the stables, twenty hours a day for literal peanuts.

I was gonna say something about the ltl world.
But. You did it for me.
Only the name changes.
Thanks.

AMEN Monkeywrench!!!!

it too bad that you are ready to throw in the towel after only one year driving. and XPO didn't meet your expections. i started in 1978 after if got out of the Army. Have not been all LTL and all nonunion. had nine driving jobs, and after 24 yrs CWX, Conway and XPO being the last driving job i'll have, retiring in May '18. If and when you leave XPO, i wish you the best of luck in your future plans. You have good jobs and bad jobs. good management and bad. Good trucks and bad. good days and bad days. be safe and if you think its unsafe no one is forcing you. Its better to get fired because you'll be healthy to find another job. Keep your driving record clean, a good work history and you will always have a job

They don't have to fire drivers. Age, health and attrition are taking them fast enough. In this post you describe the current environment. Both the young man and the old man are walking away. For different reasons. But the result is the same.
