Just wondering what you all think if vacation should be by company seniority or road or city board senority?? As far as i know company seniority is only good far layoffs or if transferring when during a reconfiguration..

Vacations were bid by seniority but at the beginning of the year in the 4 barns I was in, in the central region. If you didn’t bid it at the beginning of the year it was first come first serve. Not a fed ex driver. But that was Watkins way back then also.

I was in California last week, and heard come January, the new vacation policy will be determined by your hat size... Biggest gets first bid....

Nope
You'd someone who sat on a PT dock position for 20yrs,go through the driving program, and outbid a 19yr driver.

It's fine like it is.

Vacation bidding goes by company seniority starting in Dec. the second round if you have vac. banked you can bid what weeks are open.

I personally think vacation should be bid by company seniority...you earn your vacation time by years of service with the company regardless of job class, we should be able to bid that way as well IMO.

I disagree on this one. Would you also want to bid tractors and runs by company seniority instead of job class seniority? I wouldn't. Vacation seniority begins at hire date even for part time dock. Suppose a part timer of many years gets full time as a driver. He shouldn't get bidding superiority over drivers above him in his new job class.

I say top guy gets to pick all his vacation first, then through seniority down to bottom guy who gets last pick what's left, no matter the job classification. You only come into the fold after your full-time, part-timers fall in after last full-timer of the seniority list.

I’ll have to respectfully disagree with both of you, no one is talking about tractors or runs/bids, we’re only talking about vacation...apples and oranges. As for part time employees, that should be a different vacation board just as different job classes function.
I can’t speak for the city but the road in CLT does bid our entire vacation that will be earned for that year during the first go round but we can only bid two weeks max during the “prime” months, that way everyone will get at least one week during the “prime” vacaction months. The second round is for banked vacation and third round is single days.
I’ll again disagree with the one board scenario that you and others suggested since job classes function in different manners. Every job class having their own vacaction board works the best IMO although vacation only should go by company seniority, not job class.

NOTE: “prime” months in CLT are March and May through the first week or so in Sept. It’s been said that mid Oct through mid Dec may be added as “prime” months due to so many wanting off for hunting season.

I have to respectfully disagree Red. When you change job class you know that you are basically giving up your seniority. I would not change job class now because I got to many years in to give it all up. It would have to take something drastic for me to change. At my center the city drivers bid the way you described it at CLT

Company seniority begins on hire date. This is true even if hired as part time dock worker. How would you like it if a long time part timer went through the driver development program and then was able to bid to your department. Now you are saying it's okay for him to have vacation bid precedence over you. Also as we bid everything else by job class seniority so why is it apples and oranges when it comes to vacation?

Such an important issue with drivers and dock workers like this.
One would think that the procedure would be in the online employee portal ?

I love the seniority system. Once you figure out that you don’t need to work any harder than the guy above you in seniority, because there is no reward in it, then it’s smooth sailing. Only do just enough not to get fired and eventually you’ll get a nice pick on vacation, equipment, and start time. No need to invest hard work or try to excel past your senior coworkers. Just invest time.

Now you’re talking part time vs full time...again, apples and oranges.

We, full timers, accrue vacation time by years of service with the company, we should be able to bid our vacation time by years of service with the company, regardless of job class seniority. We don’t accrue vacating time by job class seniority so why do we bid it that way?? By bidding through job class seniority, you’re actually punishing the employees for trying to better themselves IMO.
