I am barely computer literate and barely can use this website and thank goodness can use the handhelds...there was an article yesterday in the USA Today regarding big time XPO violations at ports with HOS and wage/benefit issues...can someone please cut/paste/post? I will also place this on the XPO forum...wow, XPO--what a player!

It has never been a big secret that most cartage companies operating around ports, or rail yards have used, and abused owner operators keeping them just broke enough, that it forces them into dire financial situations with equipment, and their homes. The local, state, and federal government knows this also, but would rather not get involved until someone files a complaint, and vocalizing to the media. And with a high percentage of immigrants trying to make a living,as o/o's, these companies also know many are either illegally in this country, or threaten them enough to keep them in place.

As an O/O before I came to ABF 25 years ago, I hauled out of Baltimore, Norfolk and New Jersey piers,.....and I saw the graft, corruption and abuse first hand. It ain't new......

U.S. Customs agents charging $50.00..........cash, mind you,......to open the back of a trailer so they can inspect it.....

Yeah,.....right.....

Hell when they would open and inspect container they always took "samples" . I backed a load in and they need 25 leather jacket samples in November!! They sealed it back up and the customer said that's normal business, the shipper throws extra's in there for just that.

That,....and all the other,..."abuses",....O/O's suffer on the piers. There was a dispatcher for a large container shipper,.....( begins with an "M"...ends with a "K"..)...whose "hobby" was dealing in baseball cards. If you wanted a good load,...you bought boxes of baseball cards..........

And the "fruit scams" during the hour-and-a-half lunch period..........The tire repair scams,.....the "tipping" of pier employees,......

All this still goes on.........

Mafia 101?

Mafia 101? As the piers are a government entity,...i.e. Port Authority of Baltimore,..., Port Newark....Port Authority of Norfolk,......this is what happens when all the Good Ol' Boys get control by grafting out each other,.....at the expense of working people.

There are no rules, regulations, or oversight. Many "vendors" on the piers are private entities or contractors. This is a true "free market" economy here..........you want "speed and efficiency"? Then you'd better be prepared to pay for it...........

Mafia could learn a thing or two about institutionalized bribery..............First thing you do is privatize all your murder contracts.........

Even privatizing those ‘contracts’ aren’t ‘private’ enough! :)
