and what's your point of posting this on here. We all knew they were doing this
We were told they are moving a lot of these operations into existing ltl facilities by our manager a couple weeks ago. My guess the lines will start to blur a bit. It’s no surprise they said they were planning to do it 2 yrs ago .. he’ll they even did it at our barn last year to deliver some ltl freight. Thanks for posting it.
If you do liftgate freight all the time would it bother you to see some "Last Mile" guy in a van get the crappy freight?
My only concern with that scenario is if we start using contractors ( that’s what Last mile employees are) and they start moving ltl shipments ( instead of their usual home delivery and set up stuff) ltl driver will be competing wth contractors who do it at a cheaper cost to the company Hence putting downward pressure on our compensation. Yes I understand theoretically it would be nice not to have that liftgate stuff but that’s where I talk of blurred lines of how does what. When thy experimented with this at our barn they were getting a lot more than just liftgate freight. Last mile can do a lot of stuff cheaper than us. I’m just saying watch what you wish for. Ultimately Xpo can do what they want when they want and most can not do anything about it.
Independent contractors have existed for a long time. Some hold CDL's. At any given point since XPO Logistics purchased Con-way Freight Inc , there are thousands of ads in place for drivers for "XPO Logistics" - in fact , if you go back in these threads on this board , you will see the very same concerns you have expressed ( sucker666 ) being voiced by others.
Downward pressure. Roadrunner. FedEx Ground. Amazon. Uber. Off the top of my head these are a few companies or business units of large companies that pedal in "asset light" independent contractor style business model. It's been around a long time and unless something changes , it's not going anywhere.
Correct me if I'm wrong , but isn't all of FedEx Freight in Canada handled outside of their company? For sometime ( I don't know if it still goes on now ) New York City deliveries were all contracted out by XPO ( formally Con-way Freight ) and what about remote places that it makes no sense to have a terminal or zone driver? Who delivers XPO LTL freight in Alaska?
And don't forget subservice. Almost all LTL carriers engage in purchase transportation. Some sit drivers at home while independent contractors run their linehaul or some even pedal in the city. Go back and check the various threads. Even the union ones.
What you are concerned about sucker exists all around you in one form or fashion and has for a long time.

All fed ex ground in Canada is contract brokers.
Won't it be great to have Bubba, Hugo, Aukmed, or Otis come into your home and hook up your new 84" flat screen for you???
And they usually don't steal anything from your house....
