A few years ago one of our retirees went to work at a state of MN truck driver training school. He has now really retired, but the school will send us recruits that are interested in LTL. They sent us two. Starting pay is 90% of scale $18.04. They didn't bother to take the drug screen. They went to R&L Carriers for starting pay of $24.50. R&L has customers that pay for service,so does STDF. All these years of the fallacy about driver shortage has come true. Used to be no LTL carrier would hire someone under 25 or fresh out of drivers school. Now they do both WOW.
We have sixteen weeks until the contract expires. Stay tuned.

We can't even get YRC men who need to reset their pension for retirement. Ownership DHL says
they want to be the employer of choice. Thr pendulum has finally started to swing back the other way.
However if DHL agrees to pay increases in health & welfare plus pension, then what are they willing to
increase wages to? Three year contract $1, $1, $1 will bring top pay to $23.04. $1.50 less than R & L
Starting pay. $5 hour less than top pay at several carriers. STDF is at minimum a dime less in mileage pay. ABF pays around $25 hr full benefits and makes money.
ODFL pays over $28 hr has health ins at low cost to employees and a 401 match that is $75-80 per week.
ODFL operating ratio .85 on income close to 100% return on investment.
Well managed LTL companies make a lot of money. STDF says they are losing money. We don't get to see the books.
Are they being truthful? Are they not well managed? DHL has kept the STDF management team that came from the previous
Ownership. DHL is a global LTL carrier. Whatever happens here is what they want to happen.

And that would be a 1.50 less than the start pay. In the northeast, our top rate at R+L is 28.50 an hour.
