do you guys scale at the terminal if based off the weights it's possible to be overweight if there aren't any permanent scale sites on your route?

I know this may seem silly but I've gotten into an argument twice now with the linehaul dispatcher for scaling and then refusing to pull trailers that were 1200k over on an axle and the other put me over gross by 2000k.

He told me that there aren't any scales on my route and I don't need to scale.. he offered to "sign off" but I told him his signature doesn't mean anything to dot.

It's all on you. Most scales allow a tolerance depending on state. But,it's you that makes that call.I will pull if they sign off.Because all they will do is give to someone else if I know there is no scales on route.

If its not legal it sits, someone else wants to take the chance that's on them. No scales, ok. What about if you get into an accident? OD will fire you faster than you can say "well they signed off on it"...... OD corp wants us all to be legal, local terminals just want the freight moved. Follow the law at all times, cause corp wont have your back if you broke the law or did something you were not suppose to. Not saying corp will have your back but if you did not follow the law they will totally burn you.

It doesnt matter if scales are on your route or not.. as bull said..if its not legal let it sit. Also, just because there is no scale on your route, I dont kjnow what state you run in but, out here in the west and pac NW, we hae the DOT using portible scales so then what do you tell the dispatcher? The DOT was impressed that you signed off on the overload?...HERE's YOUR TICKET Sir..sign off on it right here....

I can't believe this is even a discussion. If you knowingly pull an illegal load you should be fired. The only way to stop dispatchers from asking drivers to pull them is if everyone follows the law. I guarantee you that if dispatch had to pay the fines, they'd never ask. Think about that.

When in holy moses has there ever been a random DOT scale after dark? Grab the tandem, dump the trailer in Hermiston and let it be someone else's problem.

I appreciate everyone's response.
Ump, the question wasn't as much as " to pull an illegal trailer or not" because I don't care if it's 200 or 2000 over it's still illegal. I was more trying to find out if guys scale every time when the trailers are heavy when they know there aren't any scales on the route.

of course at anytime you can pulled over and scaled by any state trooper, which is why I'm asking and told the dispatcher that trailer isn't moving till it's legal

It's the OD way, leave the problem for someone else to deal with. It's the rule they forgot to put in the handbook.

That could have been the page I saw Umps goat eating!
It's just a little fine, with all the money you guys make, just pay and go about your business, after all it's just money!

If there is a scale in the yard no matter the manifested weights I still scale cause the weights are not always right. If you don't scale and just assume the load is right and for whatever reason you end up getting a weight ticket down the road that's on you. Now if that yard has no scale then its on OD, or if a driver dropped it at a meet point with no weights on it and you pull it and get a ticket, then OD pays that one. That happened to me when I pulled one out of HER from SEA a few years ago. No weights and it was over on drives. OD payed the ticket. Do everyone a favor and enter the weights in the BLU and write on manifest.

Don't want to deal with overweight trailers? Go to the city. You can't stop the world's most fastest growing carrier, if there's space we're gonna use it. Keep those promises and get that freight moved. Us city guys sometimes park in no parking zones and you don't hear us crying about it.

Be careful what you post, some of your guys will be looking for that page in the drivers handbook!

Well they do now that's what you get for letting them hang around Billy. On top of that he did a dump and run but at least I got the paper

Must be someone else's goats. West coast had too many regulations for my little operation. I could get the def tanks on the little sucker, but running the hose was another story.

These threads start off good, with good info. Then it always turns into this goats and mow BS... I’d rather be talking about boats and hoes!!
