SAIA | The Noose Tightens... Saia continues to lead via threats rather than incentives.

I do see what u are saying, they only pointing out negative stuff the camera catch, the police only pull u over when u break the rule they dont pull u over and say u was doing the speed limit good job.
Yes, but the police do not employ us, we do not provide a needed service for them and they have no reason to be concerned about employee morale.

Rider look in the Garland break room and notice the recognition awards on the bulletin board in regards to the LYTX cameras. Darwin will give you certificates when he views a video capture of your safe driving abilities. One was given recently to Brandon for avoiding an accident in which he was cut off. He was alert and hit his brakes just in time to avoid an accident. They do recognize safe driving with a safety certificate. In time I’m sure they will do more.

SAIA will do more in regards to safety recognition with the LYTX system in time.

Incentives should have been made at the time the program was implemented, especially a program that is easily viewed as negative by the employee. A lot of negative reaction could have been avoided. At this point, I don't know if a small incentive will offset the bad will that has built over many months. Saia screwed up from the start on this program and have only double-downed with threats, etc. making a bad situation worse. They need someone in upper management that actually has people management knowledge, otherwise this will be repeated.

All ok cool. I be in a hurry and never noticed it. I think they should give a safety bonus or something but I'm not gone hold my breathe. I'M a drive with safety in mind to the best of my ability.

I've been following this post, and the main reactions that I have are:
1. You should not follow at a 1 second interval (for obvious reasons)
2. Saia is in CYA mode, and at the end of the day, see drivers as liabilities rather than assets, and will be treated as such.

Sort of reminds me of a big daycare situation. There are several different approaches to changing behaviors. Some are effective, others are not. I understand what Saia is trying to accomplish here. But the approach and philosophy leaves a great deal to be desired.

Based on previous posts, I can't say for sure if this was posted at all locations, or just a few. Really should be posted everywhere, based on the "HIGH" priority with which it is labeled. This type of inconsistency is, sadly, common.

Be a defensive driver. Be safe. Take the extra time. Slow down. If being safe means you bring back freight or miss pickups, your response should be "but no one got hurt, and no equipment was damaged." If safety is your fallback, it is pretty hard for management to chastise you.

Safety will always be my fallback. If they want to terminate me then so be it. You sacrifice certain things when it comes to productivity. You can’t have it both ways.

It was not posted at all locations not at mine or Atlanta for sure you are correct they are going about this with wrong tone if they posted this snarky in your face type of memo system wide people would go through the roof!!! When I first saw it I couldn’t believe it was from someone at saia but I was wrong

It’s not in Dallas or Garland. Sadly there is very little consistency here. Communication is this companies biggest downfall.

For the life of me, I can't understand how inconsistent Saia is with policies and procedures. If it ever happened where they ended up in court for firing one employee, but not another, for the same offense...I'm guessing the settlement amount would be enough so that the proceedings never occurred and the terms kept secret. Drivers talk to each other, and tend to have each others' back. Consistency is key, and Saia is clearly missing it.

It's a shame Saia doesn't seem to have much knowledge in "People Management". You can achieve better behavior results thru incentives rather than threats & force.

They fire to many drivers & they will have to close the doors. Won't have any one left to drive. But hey, on the flip side they can let their insurance underwriter know that they have cut back on the rear end accidents. von.

Plenty of sales people and middle management, but no one left to haul the freight. Sounds like a great way to make a lot of customers really upset.

If you have to be told not to follow that close, you should be terminated for being a road hazard.

I understand that nobody likes negative reinforcement policies, but they should not have to pat you on the ass to get you to stop driving like an idiot either.

Damn, excellent post. I wish I had written that. I don’t think many on here realize how close one second OR LESS is. Read the memo that started this thread. If you are that damn close you are a complete idiot. There is no defense. That is a pissed off trucker that runs up on a car because he or she made them come off their cruise. Many cars misjudge a trucks speed at times and pull over in the fast lane and force them to hit their brakes. I understand the frustration but being aggressive by running up on them at 65mpg and getting as close as 4-6 feet is just total stupidity. And in most cases that’s how you get a one second or less following distance event.

This is what you get for always maintaining a good 5ft distance between you and the trailer you are following
I always did, if hauling class A explosives, I fell back to 7 ft just so some car would not sneak in between.
Got better fuel mileage, bossman said I was doing a good job, I turned off my lights so police didn't notice.
Now I'm employed at Coop Dispatch, we are experimenting with a 6ft towbar,Big Dave says this should
be even better on fuel.
Newer drivers should consult with your safety dept. before attempting this, it is recommended for experienced drivers only.

You can’t come over here with no “hat reference.” Come back when your better prepared.
