I have had 2 new tractors lock the breaks up while wide open on the highway. Today 17738 locked up collusion alarm at 62 mph over a highway sign. This is very dangerous I wrote both trucks up . These stupid cameras are gonna get someone hurt they don’t work properly.

These tractors lock up out of the blue for no reason

Oh Good Grief! Looks like we're going to be real world guinea pigs again for the new technology they're in a sweat to install so they can get an insurance break .....for "safety" equipment.

If the "safety" equipment....fails,....and causes a wreck.......it must be something the driver did.

Or, at least,....that's how the corporate people will put it......

I'm old enough to remember the 121 Anti-Lock brake disaster in 1977.......Government mandated first-generation computer brakes on tractor trailers.....Insurance companies and manufacturers ganged up on Government to help eliminate trucking company liability,....and to force immediate compliance without real-world testing.

Only after several hundred fatalities did the Government rescind the Mandatory provision that applied to heavy trucks only........

Be Safe,.......and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! What...."works"...in ideal laboratory conditions........sometimes doesn't work in the Real World......
 
Had a tractor do that to me once. It kept turning off the fuel at inconvenient times because I was going faster than the posted speed. The only problem was the posted speed was for the exit ramp.

Not a brake lock, but squirrely none the less.

I’m talking about the new camera tractors the 17’s the cameras see a highway sign at just the right angle or a small piece of metal on the road the computer flashes collusion alert and sometimes locks the breaks up.

At the equipment meeting one of the manufacturers reps said there getting 60 weight ups a day on this.

I’m presuming you meant “write ups”......

The manufacturers rep should’ve been tied to the front bumper of one of these “camera equipped” trucks. Once he risked his life like we do on a daily basis, placing our faith.....and lives on his companies’ technology,.........I bet he would have a quick fix to these glitches........or removal until they are street ready.

Stop using truck drivers as guinea pigs.....

It was probably illegal but I "heard" some of the problem 121 units had the circuit breaker removed for the anti lock system & the 121 dash light hooked to the oil pressure warning light. When the ignition switch was turned on the oil pressure light & the 121 light came on & both went out when oil pressure reached the oil sending unit. When the 121 system was disabled the tractor went back to manual braking. Our maintenance director was opposed to government involvement in the trucking industry. He kept record of all costs of the 121 mandate & it was very costly for a system that never worked properly.
 
Yes these units were wrote up by me and I have the copies to prove it the company is well aware of the problem. Our shop fourman clams the manufacturers have no fix yet. The manufacturers are negligent it’s gonna cost them.

The camera reported a collusion with a highway sign and locks the breaks up Its just a camera error. The cameras didn’t work properly

Our tractors had no warning light on oil pressure or 121, when the unit malfunctioned, the brake pedal was like stepping on a sponge.
Turn ignition off, it would switch to manual braking, 6v92s had engine stop cables.
Company disabled the 121 system on the whole fleet after several accidents.

Connecting the oil pressure warning wire to that dash light made the 121 system light illuminate when the ignition switch was turned on then when the engine started the light would go out. Trailers didn't have ABS then, only the tractors so brakes would get hot & fade. Most fleets finally disabled the ABS system because of accidents. Parts for the 121 system were very expensive. Several companies made the 121 systems. Our fleet had Eaton. I remember some rumors that Kelsey Hayes equipped tractors would pick up signals from radio communications & apply the brakes or cause brakes to malfunction & have little to no braking.

I think a guy from Bendix came to Charl. and worked with the shop.
We also had an incident, they claimed a linear amp on a CB caused the brakes to apply.
Only incident I had was bobtail, and had no brakes period, with the switch on.
 
I worked linehaul for Gateway at the time (1977). Somewhere around here, I have a company flier that told guys not to use CB radios in the tractors as they were getting reports of CB radio "interference" with the 121 system...

Imagine! Not use a CB radio back in 1977? Yeah, Right! They were just covering their fat Liability butts in case of an accident......

CB in the wreck? Driver's Fault!
