Hello, I was called to interview for a driver training job next week in South Bend. I was offered a dock worker job at YRC also in South Bend. I've done a bit of reading on both forums about the pros and cons of each company, but I was hoping for any information from someone who works at this location.

Pm's are fine if you don't want to post for everyone to read, mostly want to know about working conditions in South Bend, open dock or bumpers, how management treats the employees, things like that.

Was told the driver pay starts around $21.80/hour. O.T. after 8 and 40. Insurance package for a few dollars a week. 80% bid jobs 20% on call.

One thing that gives me concern is they want you to sign a two year contract and pay back 7k if you don't complete it, person I talked to wasn't sure but didn't think it was pro rated at all (so if you quit month 22 you pay full amount). Also could not answer what would happen if you were terminated before the 2 years is up.

If anyone works in this location I would appreciate any advice or information you have.

Bobby, I think it's highly unlikely anyone from any specific location will respond locally because most of us want to remain anonymous. I can tell you this. The starting wage being offered to you by XPO once you become a driver is pretty close to what YRC pays as it's top wage. Just about any XPO location is going to top you out at over 26.00/hr. As to you concern about being on the hook for schooling, so what? It's only for two years and a CDL with even just two years experience can be quite valuable in the future. Good Luck!

Insurance a few dollars a week at xpo? Single no children and in phenomenal health may cost a few dollars each workday if you choose to break it down that way

After having rode the wave at the old Con-Way, then checking out the union side of things for a bit, I finally got on board with another non-union ltl. Do yourself a favor, and go with the non-union XPO.

Go with XPO. Ive worked at both companies. The dock to driver is a good program and they do a through job training new drivers. At least the ones that rode with me were good for being brand new behind the wheel. Plus your gonna have weekends off at XPO and have more of a schedule vs YRC which is heavily an on call job.

The XPO I worked out of had a better working environment that YRC also. Drivers are happier and there’s not a lot of doom and gloom atmosphere like the YRC terminal I worked out of.

Both companies have their pros and cons but for a new guy XPO is a good gig.

Best of luck with your new endeavor.

I’ve worked at both places as well. Both of these jobs should be considered stepping stones to get your CDL and move on XPO will pay more and you should have a better schedule. YRC will treat you more like and adult and their insurance is better but they pay less, most of their equipment is junk and they could go belly up at anytime. XPO could have a shaky future as well if the are sold again. If I was unemployed I would only work for XPO right before I became homeless. YRC was pretty decent to work for and I would apply again if I had to.

So, I think what they are saying is..... try OD. The options you have given are both bad.

The reality is that a CDL can be difficult to obtain and the driver classes here are top notch. Once you get the license and are making good money 7K will seem like a drop in the bucket to get your freedom and take the wheel of your choosing.

CDL = CASH

I honestly don't understand why all of you guys are so down on working here. I've worked here twice. Only thing that has really changed is they take it a whole lot easier on the driver's then they used to. I've had a whole lot worse jobs making less money. I've also worked at OD for 7 years. alot of it depends on your terminal. There are quite a few terminals at OD I would run not walk away from no matter how much they were paying, others I would work at in a heartbeat.

Now if you want to talk about whether this is a good industry to get into at this point in time that's a more appropriate conversation. But if you're already dead set on getting into LTL I would go with XPO because once you get your CDL you have more options of what you can do. If I had it to do all over again I would have stayed as far away from a truck as I could of. This industry sucks you in and it's hard to get out. On the other hand it's always paid the bills
