ABF | New tractors spontaneous breaking list

Nighttime AM was the best,....pre-satellite days. Midnight on, you could get good reception right about to 5:00 . Kept me awake many nights.....

I remember Art Bell, don't recall Dearborn
Two of us left at midnight, we had WWL N.O. till about 5AM . just like you say, then it was CB time.
My AM was about good as a Pill, for staying awake.

The freightliners are the ones that lock the brakes when it beeps at a over head sign . Every time any of us drive one of these units that lock the brakes on the road by the computer write the number down .. If someone has a wreck, they (ABF) should have to dig deep out of there pockets. I was on wet roads last week and truck done a nose dive braking . A wild ride for a few seconds.. Freightliners only.. No problem with the macks. I guess ABF trust this junk more than a seasoned driver with 25 years experience on the road.. I hope no one gets hurt on this junk ABF is putting in there trucks.

Be careful, Brother. We all know how the corporate people trust technology more than loyal employees. Sooner or later, most drivers will have their own Go-Pro cameras,...just so their estate can have the evidence that the technology failed in the real world.

I don't want to wish that on anyone,.....but,.....

Go look at my post on "cab-under" tractors. Google it,....and then sit back in amazement at the corporate stupidity that thought this was a...."good idea"...

Years ago a higher echelon management person said there is a difference between being on the leading edge of technology & being on the bleeding edge. I think the problematic Freightliner system can be considered to be the later.
I remember several company investments that were costly & did little to improve safety or efficiency.

The Freightliner system I referred to as the latter is the Detroit Assurance system while Mack uses the Bendix system. Historically Detroit has been on top of new technology & innovations.

But,.....do they test in the Real World?

(....Or is that what they're doing now?...)...

Real world conditions are much different from laboratory conditions. The ill fated 121 brake systems are just one example of that. Trucks operate under adverse conditions that test the quality of products. I don't know if Detroit evaluated their system thoroughly. I do know there is no room for error with truck braking systems. There is no second chance in emergency stops with trucks. I am sure manufacturers know they are liable for faulty products that can cause accidents. Of course if there is an accident the trucking company is also liable if it had knowledge there was a problem with a particular model truck & continued to operate those trucks. Word spreads quickly among fleet maintenance men of defective products & a safety problem will stop others from placing orders of that product. I am sure there is an urgency within Detroit headquarters to solve this problem.
ABF has been willingly used as a guinea pig in the past to evaluate new products.

I could get a WWVA signal when I was in Northern Maine. WBAP also had a strong signal but I don't think it carried very far north. I could sometimes get a signal strong enough to listen at night when I was in Southern Nevada. I don't know the exact mileage from Vegas to Dallas but the signal from that station was strong. I think they advertised 50K watts of power. Bill Mack had an audience that wasn't just truckers even though he was regarded as the trucker's DJ.
Certain stations had a 50,000 watt power broadcast license. A few I can remember. WOWO out of Fort Wayne, IN, KSL Salt Lake City, WLW The Queen, Oh, KOMO Seattle, WA WGN Chicago WHO Des Moines IA, WSM Nashville, TN, WABC NY NY, WBBM Chicago & Many more. von.

As long as there is a driver in the truck..........companies have a “liability “ out. No matter what the technology does,......it will be the driver’s response to any failure that determines the outcome of any lawsuit.

Even in cases of extreme technology failure,.......where it’s provable that the technology caused the accident,.......the liability will get.....”spread around”......as long as there is a sueable entity in the cab......the driver......

Kind of like an attorney saying in front of a Jury. He ran over a piece of metal in the roadway & failed to swerve or stop in time to prevent the blowout which caused the roll over which killed the family of 5. And the Jury gives them 10 million because I didn't swerve? Oh, & the accident happened @ midnight making visibility hard to see the metal in the roadway. And the Appeals court affirms the 10 million dollar judgement. von.

Pretty much........" The technology failed/reacted improperly to the conditions,....and I didn't react in time, Your Honor......"

" That would be your opinion, Mr. Truckdriver,.......Since technology is infallible, we rule that it was your reaction alone that caused the accident.."

And fer chrissake Brakes not "Breaks".

I think we get the gist of what he was saying, Brother. Except for "certain" people here on this board..(me..)....We aren't held to a high standard of semantics, punctuation, or grammar. A Good Point is a Good Point.....

As far as me,.....I hold myself to an impossibly high goal of perfection........only because I am a fussy, old curmudgeon with plenty of time on my hands, and access to a Thesarus...........

Might wanna dust off the cover of that THESAURUS, so you can atleast spell it right.
