ABF | ABF ROAD CHANGE OF OPERATIONS

Hopefully not dead. I’d like to see how fast they’d come back to the bargaining table if we gave a 72-hour notice to strike.

They will probably bring Tyson Johnson out of mothballs so he can continually keep visiting the terminals, telling us that we need to keep re-voting on walking, until we agree to take whatever the company wants us to take.

We received a letter stating that the union and management was going to meet in Scottsdale on Jan. 30th, tho finalize the agreement. I went into work yesterday and was told that them two parties moved it up to yesterday without telling us.

Word is...UE is toast, no change of operations, no following the work, 8 employees will lose their jobs.

That is some tough negotiating on the part of our representatives.

Our union leaders are the pigs inside the house, and we now find ourselves in an increasingly Orwellian situation.

They did not move the change of operations. I’m in it. UE does not need a change of operations. The company eliminated 42 UE runs which means the UE driver dovetails into the city wherever his seniority lets him go on the city board. When you sign up for a UE position you are signing up for a city position that gets a dollar extra an hour to cross job classifications. That makes you City without retreat rights. Even if you bid off a road position. There was 42 UE driver positions eliminated on January 14. The change of operations effects the road positions transferred to end of line terminals not UE.

When you sign up for a UE position you keep your seniority and take the position as a city driver bidding a UE run. That makes you City without retreat rights. Even if you bid off a road position as soon as city bids come up in your terminal you bid by seniority with city guys to hold a UE bid. There was 42 UE driver positions eliminated on January 14.
At our small EOL terminal, when they eliminated both of our UE runs, dozens of points went from next day to 2 to 3 days. We have seen a fall off of freight, and I believe much of it is due to the service times. I try not to be paranoid, but I sure do see a lot of Panther trucks at customers where we used to make pick-ups for those next day points. Can anyone say "shell game"? Since the company has made sure our transit times are not competitive, is there really anything we can do about it?

I’m a road driver at an end of line and they did the same thing. They shut down our next day service even though we have been an hv terminal for the past 10 years. Says we wasn’t making service but I suspect the same as you. The 3pl is giving our gravy freight away and leaving the scraps no one else wants.

When we became an HVXP terminal, through the change of op's, the freight from 120 ABQ allowed 2 employees from that terminal to follow the work. Them two guys had to go onto UE until the semi-annual bid for city, they stayed on UE, we had several linehaul jobs abolished as a result of the change of op's, so they had to become UE drivers.

This time around, the company chose not to do a change of op's, so now them UE drivers fall under the city board. It is the unions position that therefore they cannot dovetail into linehaul, if they want to go to linehaul they have to endtail. So if they choose to go to linehaul, a guy with 20 years of service, goes below a guy ABF hired six months ago.

Not sure if in that scenario that is the way it is always done, but it sure stinks to me...them former linehaul drivers through no fault of their own were forced onto UE. FWIW, the terminal manager said that the decision is up to the union. Calls to Ken Hall's office, results in a nasty hang up by his secretary.

If you have two separate seniority lists it's up to the local union. You would have to start at the bottom..There must be one master list for this terminal for bumping two lists to be allowed.

Thanks, although I worked for ABF for 12 years, I have only been through one change of ops... in foodservice, we never had that arrangement.
So I guess that if that is the case, the blame falls on the company for not doing a change of ops reverting it back, so that seniority could dovetail.

A pretty crappy deal all in all, it doesn’t affect me, but for them guys, it is probably best to remain on city.

It’s not the company. The union sets up single or dual seniority boards when they set up the local and or the terminal. UE has always been a city job. It’s been in at least 3 National Master Freight Contracts.

The city work got eliminated,So back to the city board.Break bulls usually have two boards. If your city ,stay or jump to the road board. No one wants to get bumped. The members want it this way.

I didn't take it that way.Union proud ,I have what I have because of brotherhood. That's never gonna change.I bleed blue and gold.If you don't believe in something you have nothing.I'll never regret it.
Did you not see what I was saying on the XPO board? I'm ridiculously pro-union, even in front of some obvious office-working shills like them. I was mocking what those idiots would say in the face of such difficult negotiations.

Fair enough.I take offense to others that mock us .This is no joke .Our livelihood is at stake by the onslaught of non union carriers and those that would wish we go away.

I know it's not a joke. The joke was the idiots who actually think not having a union somehow improves their relationship with the company.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess the way I should have phrased it was that it is unfortunate that the company didn’t do a change of ops to revert things back.
