2 questions for a current Saia driver. First question: I heard drivers are coming for interviews and saying no thank you to the job offer because of your drivecam policy. Is that true? The second question: are they taking out the drivecam because they can’t get or keep drivers?

1) Yes, a couple of prospective drivers came in for the test drive and found out about drivecam and said " no thanks". They were not told about them during interview. ( That's from the guy that does Road Test )

2) As long as Staver is over safety I don't see them taking the camera's out. If she suddenly retires maybe.....

As far as interviews I couldn’t tell you but I highly doubt they’re taking them out, especially with this regime. They took all of our older trucks and gave them to ATL or MPS so every truck we have has a camera.

Seems like every company is going with some sort of camera. Do they interview over the phone or in person? Are your Linehaul drivers assigned tractors? I guess there are certain things that would make the camera go off?

Interview in person. Tractor bidding usually varies per terminal but I think all LH have assigned tractors. These trucks have a distance alert that will trigger the camera. Hitting hard bumps, stopping too hard, turning too fast/hard, breathing on it, etc... and yes most companies have cameras but most don’t abuse them like Saia.

All of the companies that are using Drivecam are abusing it now and they wonder why they can’t get drivers in the door anymore. I can understand why they want to put drivecam in the trucks but if you write me up for going 65 in a 55 mph zone that’s bullshit.

We had one quit halfway through his training week because of the camera
And we’ve had several that have adapted and love working for SAIA. For every one that quits we have a couple that stay. It’s all about the bottom line for many. The pay and benefits are hard to beat. And many also also understand that all LTL companies have issues and some BS. They are just different.

My biggest problems with cameras.
1. There is no written policy as far as disciplinary action, it seems to be discretionary from region to region, terminal to terminal.
2. Not all trucks have cameras in them, its a hard pill to swallow when your disciplined for being on your phone and a driver goes rolling across the yard with their blue parrot on because they have no camera.
3. Your camera is triggered by a pothole or bump in road and they find something on the video they didnt like and discipline you for it.
4. They tell you that the cameras are not being used to get rid of you. Then why are people being fired for camera violations ?
5. And for the most part the ones doing the coaching have never even seen the inside of a truck !

Train i think the ones that are staying have little choice, they coudnt get hired on elsewhere. When your having to throw money at people to come work for your company then there is an issue. We have lost alot of drivers because of the cameras and im not talking 1 to 5 year drivers, alot of 20+ year drivers have left because of the way they are being treated . This company may have good pay and bennies but have forgot about respecting your employees. And i think imo, that it started when the current head of safety took over. I have been here almost 20 years and have never seen micromanaging like this. Definitely makes me think about continuing with this company.

The productivity and profitability numbers that your company is reporting are very good. But the company must not lose sight of who makes those numbers happen. There is a fine line between safety and ridiculousness. And I think in some ways, that line has been crossed. Will they change that approach? Doubt it. I think it’s only a matter of time until you start failing service due to less drivers (suspended, quit, etc).

I’ve been suspended 3 times already, one more and I’m canned. Needless to say, I start at OD in 2 weeks lol. The feeling of not knowing whether or not I’ll be fired when I show up to work for some bs they decided to make up gets old.

Damn yea that’s sad. But you gotta do what you have to do

Talked to Garland driver Friday says he's leaving and going to OD Dallas...he and the new safety guy @ Garland not getting along 11+ years with Saia?

Now they are tacking on 36 mth probation along with day off ? Understand that is now included on some violations. Keeps getting better.

Troy is a bit condescending and arrogant according to most which is surprising since he just came out of line haul with this so-called promotion. You would think he would understand the drivers perspective but instead the job has appeared to go to his head. I don’t really care because my time is limited here but if he’s ready to go to war with the old timer I’m most certainly ready. I’ve beat much better than him with the war of words and his tattoos don’t intimidate me at all. He’s making enemies faster than anyone I can recall and that’s not good in his new position.
