Type the business into a web browser of choice and the company website will show you where they are and have phone numbers if you want to call them. When I was in the city I carried a map book of the area. You always have those dead spots. I would like to see these guys do it without there phones. When I started in LTL we had two-way radios in the trucks. It was nice if you need help on a stop.

You can save Google maps(offline) on your phone for areas with out service. I don't carry a paper map anymore! If I have a stop I don't know I almost always go with the "ask an old guy" strategy. But not needing a csr to hunt down an contact is the best part of having a smartphone.

I still don't wear them. They are very awkward. I have fallen more than once on ice. The last time I was at the FAC, backed into the door and walked up to jabber with somebody on the dock and then walking towards the front of the truck to go around and disconnect the air lines. Right around the drivers door my feet went clean out from under me and on my butt I went. Plopped back and made a snow angel motion while the hostler drove by and we both laughed. I understand there is a slight risk of injury. But if ice is going to hurt me doing this job, I pray it happens while the truck is parked.

Smartphones are the best tool we have in the city. I don't miss those giant map books at all. Check addresses, get phone and suite numbers, check traffic, see where the dock is, what driveway to use, if you're near civilization you can even see what the building looks like with street view. Amazing stuff.

Tech is great until it stops. Look at what happens when the handhelds go down or better yet the power goes out at your barn. You would think as much as we use the tech every barn would have a stand by generator ready to go.

Have you ever had to deliver to the customer you can't find on Google Maps? When you finally find them they say something like " I know , right? It says our business is miles away. We know about it , sorry we didn't tell you on the phone"

I wonder... Is the accident rate lower and is it cheaper to insure tractors with the active cruise control/lane departure warning systems?

We are self insured. The company doesn’t pay rates or premiums. What ever happens comes out of pocket.
