I think that Varys in what your overhead expenses are. What vehicle you use and how many blocks you are willing to take. On some routes I signed for a four hour block and completed in 2 1/2. Remember most who are doing Flex are also driving U/L as well.
The key thing is flexibility. I know we get used to the regular 9-5 or whatever, but being able to have flexibility with your time is awesome. I didn’t loose a beat when I left and took early retirement from Holland. Sure I miss a few things and not everyone is able to leave that toxic mess due to various reasons.
I have insurance that is equal to what I had there through my wife and that played a big part in being able to leave, I also paid off 80% of my debts before going and lived within my means and budgeted awhile back. I have also invested in my own for retirement the entire 20 yrs I was with them and will get a better return. Pension good years will help as well, but wasn’t gaining anything since the freeze so why stay.
The models I brought up are important to understand as this is the direction that is possible for some of these companies and those who choose to leave companies like YRC and others. They already work as proven with the volume that Amazon already does. With their purchase of Whole Foods this will only increase the volume and availability to earn on their platform. For UPS and others they are looking to diversify and have the ability for flexibility that sad to say the Unions fight against. I get it, Teamsters Brothers and all and I do still feel there is a place. But not everyone thinks that way and never will and nothing is going to change that especially since they look at companies like YRC and see how the Union didn’t share equal sacrifice nor did much to improve our situation long term. And this company is so messed up all around one wonders how the doors have remained open this long. 19’ will be telling and I pray for my brothers that are buying the last few years that they survive long enough to get those years.
There is life on the other side. You can use things as a bridge for other things like I am, but being complacent knowing you really will never get what you had back and letting it effect you in negative ways as it does for so many on here and throughout the company ( me included till I left) is not a way to go through life. Life is short and we can only make what we want out of it.
By the way on those platforms you get to write off your miles and other expenses come tax time. There are trade offs and it is not for all and most here frown upon those platforms, but for others you can make good numbers, like I said since I left I haven’t missed a beat and have other revenue ventures in play as well. You have no idea of my numbers and no I won’t share, but they are actually right in line with what I made driving 50 hrs a week for Holland.A song and dance that's what he is making. Depreciation and wear and tear on the dedicated vehicle is factored in to operating cost and tax deductions. If you are not of the small business mindset and are perfectly happy working for a company then no dont do it. If you are of a different independent mindset that is able to run your own business then yes it is a revenue stream. I have multiple streams of revenue, I work my butt off don’t get me wrong, getting a small business up and running from scratch is not easy nor cheap. But the flexibility and getting away from the toxic environment known as YRC only those who have can explain it to you. And the longer you are away the better it is!
By the way one can question who really is brainwashed.. question since 2008 what Really has the Union done? Has your pension been increased? Do new hires even have one? Wages have they gone up or down? Protections? Let’s see I knoticed guys that in any other job in many cases would have lost their job and should have for many of the things they did, while at the same time those guys that did their job and complained about those who didn’t become pariahs. Insurance well yes for now they have that to fall back on as a selling point, but will they after 19’ and really we have been paying for it since 2009 just not officially.
And WHY is YRC/Holland having such a hard time getting experienced drivers? Never did these companies or Roadway take guys out of driving schools. Yes, yes driver shortage and all, but when most of us came on board we all needed experience to even be considered, and thus we were the so called elite at the time.. those times are over.
As for retirement: take responsibility for yourself and invest besides relying upon a pension or SSI. The return on the later ones are either locked in as we always were with a pension and the SSI return rate compared to your contributions over the lifetime of work is low. Of course take those and your own investments and you are not Slave dependent on one or the other.
Live within your means and get out of debt because the borrower is Slave to the lender and also Slave to working at a dying company.

After operating cost it came out to be $21.50 since I still got paid for the 4 hr block, but did it in 2 1/2 hrs. The vehicle that is dedicated for this is a 4 Cyl gets 32 Highway and averages 25.5 I withhold 25% for taxes, but I also get to deduct the standard mileage rate for 2018 of .53 cents a mile. The vehicle is fully paid for so no note, you still average in the insurance and the repairs long term with the 25% withholding each pay period. After the block was up I have the option to bid another block or go online on a different platform and generate revenue there. As I said I have other streams of revenue besides the mentioned ones. As a matter of fact all last week I didn’t utilize any of the mentioned ones since the snow came down in this area and I had crews including myself out removing it. 21 straight hrs last Friday, 10 Saturday, and 11 on Sunday. That weekend alone even after paying the two crews and all operating expenses netted me more then my best 3 months ever at Holland.
