FedEx Freight | Pre/Post Trip Inspections

Just to add to the pic and post provided earlier by @citydog, the pic he posted earlier was a defect found by a driver on his lead trailer....

Here’s what the driver found on the rear trailer once he hooked the set and proceed to do his pre-trip...

The two trailers were brought in separately and once hooked this is what he found!!! Now imagine what could’ve happened had this driver just stopped at the landing gear and not done a pre-trip???? The driver who found these defects runs through a highly congested stop and go area on his way out of town and then into the Appalachian Mtns...what if someone who was running late cut him off in traffic then slammed on the brakes in front of him...what if that someone was your loved ones...what if that someone had your children in the backseat!!!

Thank GOD this driver did a proper pre-trip and found these defects before he or someone else was seriously injured!!
Guys have GOT to start doing their pre/post trips...not only is it the law, but lives depend on it!!

I also want to share something I found...

Was hooking a set and when I “tugged” on the rear trailer I observed the wheels rolling, I thought to myself, great, the brakes are out of adjustment. Look at what I found during my pre-trip...

I knew there was no way the brakes could be this bad out of adjustment so upon further investigation, this is why they were so bad...

How nice of a driver to leave me a brake chamber hanging by the air lines!!! I mean really??? All they had to do was bend over and look under the trailer...had it been a snake they would’ve got bitten!!!

Luckily I caught the defect but judging by the rust on the broken bracket, it had been this way for a while. A simple defect that could’ve been caught by anyone had they done a simple pre/post trip!!!

He said he tugged the trailer not that he was dragging it clown. You mean you don’t do a tug test when you hook?

Lol you calling someone a clown bwhahahaha. Yes after the landing gear is up, but I always visually check to see if fifth wheel is hooked before I tug on trailer.

So you hook a trailer, get out and visually check the 5th wheel, roll the landing gear, get back in the truck and tug test, then pull forward so you can do a pre-trip??? I’ve been at your center in the am and watched you hook...I call BS on that one!!! Next time I’ll take a video for proof!!

Yep sure do. Don't lie, I hardly ever pull a set in fact probably only hooked a set once in the last 6 months, but you magically were there watching me that morning. :clappy:

Since I’m on a roll with my pics, thought I’d share a few more...

Seems we have a real problem somewhere within the system with inadequate air pressure which is leading to loose lug nuts!! There’s been three cases recently that I know of...two that were caught by drivers at the meet point and the third led to the wheels, brake drums, etc coming off while going down the highway which destroyed the hub (the scary part is three drivers missed one of the simplest defects...loose lug nuts)!!

Here’s a pic of the loose nuts found at the meet point. Notice how they damaged the rims while also destroying the hub (not pictured). The trailer had to be towed backwards with a dolly under the nose...

In this pic you can see the metal shavings laying in the bottom of the rim (no, that’s not dust)!!

All three of these incidents could have been prevented had a proper pre-trip been done...luckily two of the three were caught.
Again, I’m not perfect either and I know I miss things too but this just shows the importance of doing a thorough pre/post trip!!

CT-Red rants or hat jokes??? Huh?? Anybody??
Ha Ha wow it's been awhile since these 2 are going back and forth again, kinda missed it since the (shhh don't say it union debate thread) ooopppsss sorry I said it any ways Red/ Crazy glad to see you still like each other lol Come on Dave you just take over the thread with your LARGE HAT stay safe fellas

That's what were talking bout tard, now you're backpedaling trying to change what were talking about. Classic Red!!!!!!!!
It doesn’t matter what we “were” talking about, you still haven’t learned how to comprehend what you read...you also need to learn how to keep up, clown!!

Good to see you too Stang!!

CT’s problem is that he brings nothing to the conversation so he and his sidekick attack me and my post like they’re trying to impress someone...only problem with that is he doesn’t have the knowledge, vocabulary, or skills to challenge me so he usually ends up getting embarrassed. You now how the younger generation can be!!

Side note: His lack of comprehension skills continuously lead to a direct violation of Rule #3!!

Ok flip flopper. Not trying to impress anyone just pointing out you're shortfalls.... it's really not very hard to catch you up in a story.... Just like the other thread not to long ago about the road driver raises. You said one thing then not even a month later you did a 360 and said something totally different. I confronted you and all we heard was crickets. :hilarious:

Red has short falls, That's hard to believe!!!

About 6 or 7 years ago, we all did a preshift about eliminating tug tests due to tire wear. Someone in corporate came to my center with photos and statistics on the cost of unnecessary tire wear occurring from while we tug tested the equipment. The announced that a visual inspection of the fifth wheels was all that was needed.

Does anyone else remember that campaign? It was just before tractors began to be ordered without trolly brakes and was probably the real reason for it.

I never altered my procedure and was never reprimanded for continuing to tug test.

For what it's worth, the tug test, without dragging, is still listed on the FXFE road test check list...

When I hook my set at a dock door I usually tug test it all the way to the parking spot across from the dock. :encouragement::grin:

But all joking aside this thread has made me realize I’ve been slacking at checking out my brakes very throughly. I am doing more than my quick visual now though. Oh and I’m pretty sure I’m the only guy at my terminal that does a pretrip. I have been watching these guys and it’s all hook and book. But I do see the city guys looking over their equipment in the morning.
