SAIA | Drivecam

Apparently if you work for Saia Corp in Atlanta you don't have a clue? You are to far removed from the freight business to know how freight gets picked up / delivered.
That just doesnt apply to corporate, apparently it applies to individuals that have gone from driver to management !

Maybe they should have a conference call and remind themselves who the backbone of the company is: Drivers! Duh!

Rick might understand numbers, but clearly knows nothing about retention

Everyone that I know who has inquired about LTL, I have told them it's OD or nothing. Reputation says a lot, and Saia has a poor one when considering quality of life, work/life balance, and treating it's people with dignity and respect.

I use to love coming to work here. Today? Not so much.

That seems to be the mutual feeling across the company landscape, for drivers.
True, and it’s unnecessary because they have weaponized DriveCam and that’s not it’s original purpose and they lied about it not being used as a tool for discipline. It’s a learning tool and you will be coached. They said that!!! NOT IMMEDIATELY SUSPENDED AND PUT ON 3 YEARS PROBATION. I hate to keep repeating that theme but it’s the truth. You don’t suspend someone for a first offense and then put them on 3 years probation for a rolling stop in which you weren’t ticketed. DriveCam is flawed in the sense that it can’t get the big picture. And the company is so rigid that they can’t see that. That type of discipline is far to excessive and most drivers won’t tolerate it and will seek employment elsewhere.

Train, I totally agree with you. It seems to me that they are scapegoating drivers with no possibility of a positive result. One thing I haven’t heard you folks talk about that I am wondering...

I know there is an appeals process for accidents. Is there an appeals process for drivecam? That would seem logical, so that offenses that could affect your employment be looked at on a case by case basis.

Buck's just agreeing with you, she's sucking up, thinks you are going to give her a job mowing grass when you retire.

Short answer no. Comments can be made on individual videos and sent back to Lytx for further consideration. But it is up to Lytx to remove video , not Saia. But it rarely, if at all ever happens . Once you get a video your pretty much stuck with it no matter the circumstances.

36 month probation is idiotic period ! You cant work under that type of pressure effectively .

I just wonder who the brainchild in safety was that determined that was the appropriate discipline. More than likely it was someone with no driving experience at all and just sits behind a desk all day trying to make our lives harder than it already is. All in the name of safety so they can get our accolades. You can use DriveCam effectively without going over the top with excessive discipline. All they are doing is hurting driver retention and driving them straight to the competition. SAIA’s numbers are great despite safety’s incompetence. Imagine how great our numbers would be if we weren’t driving away our best drivers.

My biggest problems with cameras.
1. There is no written policy as far as disciplinary action, it seems to be discretionary from region to region, terminal to terminal.
2. Not all trucks have cameras in them, its a hard pill to swallow when your disciplined for being on your phone and a driver goes rolling across the yard with their blue parrot on because they have no camera.
3. Your camera is triggered by a pothole or bump in road and they find something on the video they didnt like and discipline you for it.
4. They tell you that the cameras are not being used to get rid of you. Then why are people being fired for camera violations ?
5. And for the most part the ones doing the coaching have never even seen the inside of a truck !
Prime reason you need a CBA. von.

You left out the part that you’re not very photogenic.

It cost them a 18 year over 2 million mile driver with no accidents and a perfect driving record. I chose to stay at my current job due to how Saia uses drive cam. We have drive cam but they use it responsibly. The post on here and a long talk with the driver who gave the road test convinced me to turn Saia down. That's a shame. I've been in LTL and foodservice 16 years and always felt Saia was a good company. If things change with the camera I may give it another try.

I guess you could summarize the whole DriveCam issue by saying that Saia got a new toy and the only ones who are allowed to play are the adults. And the deception beforehand, along with subsequent consequences is absolutely appalling. Saia should think about the Golden Rule and try that once. I mean, at least be honest.

Before DriveCam I loved this company. Now it sickens me to see what they have done with this technology.
