SAIA | Why the massive turnover will continue.

From the outside, looking in, this company is clearly attempting to completely "clean house ", either by firing drivers or creating such a caustic work environment that they leave on their own. Their "discipline policy" is merely a pretext for cleaning house under the guise of "safety". They are going to lower wages after they clean house, and continue with a high driver turnover model that is used successfully by the major carriers, aka "meat in the seat".

3 years probation for a "California Roll" that was only caught due to privacy invading dash cam? Really? I don' even work there, but I know tyranny and bullying when I see it. :censored: You, Saia
They would never lower wages because that would create a mass exodus. We have several on the fence now waiting for a wage increase announcement. If it isn’t significant they are gone. And who could blame them with all the added stress these cameras have brought. You must remember they still have a business to run and you can’t do that effectively with a serious driver shortage.

They've gotten comfy with drivers running from terminal to terminal delivering freight.

Can you say " purchased transportation"

Why do you guys keep thinking there's a driver shortage, I've been told all my life, truck drivers are a dime a dozen.
Coop Dispatch has such a large lists of applicants, Dave uses a lotery system for hiring.
Could be because of the big bucks paid by Coop.

As most know I work in Garland and not Dallas but most all my information comes from Dallas because I have many close friends that just happen to be at that terminal. Guys with top seniority that I have known for decades. I also have a couple of friends in the Houston terminal. Most all the union talk starts in Dallas and trickles down. One of the big reasons the union can’t get in the door is because of Houston. Houston is probably 80% contractors in P&D. D-FW is 100% company drivers in P&D. I mention this Joe because we are very aware of PT just as YRC and ArcBest are as well even with a CBA in place. This company could very easily convert the model in Houston to the D-FW area. They do what they do for a reason Joe. PT is used but it’s doesn’t always serve in the best interest of the company. So things remain as they are until the company feels it necessary to make a change. I remind my friends to not be hoodwinked by the Teamsters because they could easily find themselves in the unemployment line. Somewhere in this post there is a point to be made. I will leave it up to you to figure it out.

They had contract P&D drivers in MPS until 1993.
Trust me, this company knows what it takes to keep the Teamsters out. One of the main reasons I came to SAIA was because of the union free culture. Let me say that although at times this company really pisses me off and I voice my displeasure at times. This LTL company is the best one I ever worked for. And if I was fired Monday morning and escorted off the property I would have no regrets. The good outweighed the bad and a man can’t ask for more than that in my opinion. Nothing is perfect.

Of course they do. Back in the mid 90's when Yellow bought Saia and a few other regional carriers. Merged them, changed their names, and Voila!! Yellow now owns a national non union ltl carrier. BTW I make this statement with confidence. At the time I was employed with Jevic. One of the purchased companies.Gut says if Jevic was a normal ltl carrier, we would have been Saia

I didn't say or imply ANYTHING about the Teamsters , you can be replaced with a turban head with flip flops. Watkins did it for years, successfully.

I know Joe but look at the Roadrunner Transportation System business model and then look at their stock prices today. Times have changed. But you are right about us being replaced easily but it’s that way in any major corporation.

My comment about lowering wages referred to your rate of employee turnover. If you replace a (for example) a 12 year employee city driver, who is making maximum hourly rate plus free healthcare with someone fresh off the street, the rate that the company is paying for wages decreases. This could be part of something much bigger that none of us can see at the moment.

The truck driving industry is changing at a rapid pace. Losing 35000 drivers per year isn’t sustainable. Rather than work in retention, maybe Saia is focused on replacement (purchased transport, contract drivers, independent O/O).

I don't know if this is the right forum but, it has been reported that in the new trucks, the cameras don't have a light. So, when it is recording, the driver can't tell when he is being recorded. Great huh? Won't know you have a video until called in to show you.
Update ..... The new trucks do have the lights however they don’t alternate flashing colors to let you know when you trigger an event. It just keeps getting better.

I think they sitting up at midnight in a dark room twittling there thumbs thinking of stuff. Our next raise gone answer alot of my questions. If I'm a put up with b.s. its got to be worth it big time.
