ABF | Start the Picketline

Canary, you can shovel the :::shit:::!!! I have never heard anyone excuse Carter of destroying organized labor the way you did. Carter who is our most intelligent president ever. An Annapolis graduate, pioneer in the nuclear powered Navy. Or according to you a spineless dolt !!!!! And what about Carters VETO PROOF CONGRESS, were they spineless dolts too? Let's get back to total compensation!!!!!! Fire off a Titan message to your man in the new York conference of Teamsters. Get the total cost of compensation for an ABF and FEDEX freight driver. I think you would be doing organized labor a great service by providing accurate information.

And what would a comparison of labor costs between ABF and FedEx achieve? FedEx is not negotiating with their employees.......they will ..react..after ABF ratifies it's contract.

FedEx employees pay a weekly "co-pay" to their employer to....."maintain"....their health care,....one of the biggest scams going, in my opinion. Their recent start-up of a defined-benefit pension will nowhere equal a Teamster pension,.....at least not for the next 30 years. In the meantime,.....all you got for retirement at FedEx,....and just about all other non-Union places,.....is a self-funded 401(k),.....and,....Wall Street recently decreased the annuity rate to 3.5%,..from 5%. For those who know how that works,......that means you need an extra couple hundred thousand in your 401(k) before you retire,...to make the same BEFORE they lowered the annuity rate,........Work another 5-6 years........Of course their Labor costs are lower.....

The corporate philosophy is to force employees to devalue their labor,........and the resulting savings go right into corporate profits and bonuses......at the expense of our families. Comparing us to FedEx,...or any other non-Union company,...is the "race to the bottom",.....a term that such a scholar of history as you seem to be should surely recognize.

If ABF's,..........and YRC's,.......and UPSF's .......wages and benefits rise substantially higher than the non-Unions,.....then you would have the non-Unions raising their pay and benefits in response. Been in trucking long? It's always happened that way.........In a tight labor market,........the employers realize they MUST pay higher wages to maintain a competent work force.

Working in a Union job,....is an intelligence test, Brother. Do you want the highest wages and benefits for your family? Do you want job protection, and collective bargaining rights? If you do,.....then you go to a Union carrier,........If you don't understand,....or if you're not qualified,.......you follow the line of least resistance,....and get hired at a non-Union carrier.

By the way,.....I didn't call Mr. Carter a..."spineless dolt".........Those are your words,.....and what seems to be a popular debating trick, nowadays. I don't use tricks like that....

I don't have "a man" in New York Conference of Teamsters,...........unless you're using the term in a collective sense,......which, in that case,....both you and I have "a man" in New York,.......as long as you're a Teamster, too..........

You know, bubba...if I were you, I’d bow out gracefully on any more ‘arguments’ with canary. He has literally flamed your corporate ass at every turn, while you continue down this path of the typical corporate plant and try (failing all the while) to stir the pot...doing your best to create dissention among the ranks. We can see right through you, bubba! You’re as transparent as a newly-cleaned kitchen window. You claim you’re a Teamster? Based on how you comment on here, I seriously doubt that.

when Bubba sees your response, if he posts anymore, he will see that we won't even see/hear what he is saying..(don't burp at the company table in the newly constructed cafeteria in the general office paid for with concessions) while you are having lunch with Judge Judy or she will think you are a Teamster..Farting in the elevator and burping at the table? Yep, better not do that...and to finish with a "belch"..unthinkable..

Well,......I would prefer Mr. Bubba Gump would keep active on here. He raises a number of points that I've heard discussed with other drivers and employees of ABF,......and seems to be a perfect foil to address these things in an open forum.

Don't discount him as a "company" man out of hand,........He might be an actual employee that only gets his information from one source..........the dispatch window.....In that case, I'll give him credit for coming on here to get a different perspective..

There are quite a few ABF employees who don't trust their Local Union leadership.......whether that distrust is fostered by the company,.....as I suspect,........we have to work to enlighten our fellow employees that,..........just maybe,........that dispatcher/buddy of yours whose giving you the "inside scoop"..........may have an "agenda",....other than being your friend........

And,.....as most of us long-time employees know,........ABF has had an agenda for our pensions as far back as the Bob Davison ( Davidson?) era.......

If you read the papers, and watch the non-partisan news,.......you realize that ALL defined-benefit pensions, across EVERY occupation , are under attack.....not just the Teamsters.

There's kind of a "smoking gun".............Why ALL defined-benefit plans?............and why now?....when the stock market is booming, and employment is at an all-time high? I don't know about you, Brother Bubba Gump,.........but those coincidences kind of create a ........"dead rat" smell...........if you know what I mean............

Once we give up our Multi-Employer Defined-Benefit pensions,........you will NEVER get them back,........no matter how rotten, ill-advised, mis-managed, and INADEQUATE.............any company replacement plan turns out to be.................

We should be working with politicians,.....AND the employers,.....to FIX the existing plans. Once the companies realize that their employees aren't going to "vote" them out of their pension liabilities,.................MAYBE, at that point,.....they will get serious enough about our pensions to start throwing the corporate weight around Washington D.C........and support some of these Congressional Bills that are rotting in a dusty committee,......that would resuscitate our existing Defined-Benefit plans.........

Be very careful, Brother Bubba Gump,.......about falling for company-sponsored "pension alternatives".............In this alliterative "poker game" of contract talks that the company and it's employees are in,..........we're holding a Full House,....Aces High................and the company is bluffing on a Pair of Deuces..............Put your Poker Face on, Brother..................

Mr.Canary I highly respect you. But Mr.Canary lol you sure can write a book!!!! Much Respect though. Hope you’ll enjoying your retirement.

You need 3 inches of gravel for a base. Then you need a rocket stove and about eight junk pallets to burn. Let ABF see how you stand. The Union will say you can't do it. Have a roof to help keep DRY. AND DO IT!
GIVE us what WE WANT OR SHUT YOUR F DOOR'S

so what it looks like to me is a contract extension ... so the IBT and ABF has more time to negotiate?

clydesdale, 5 minutes ago Report
Tell the IBT their out and call in the AFL CIO. AND WALK OUT NOW!!!

I think that if this goes to an extension,...........it's just going to harden ABF employee resolve,...and bring about memories of the last putrid wreck of a filthy mess of a contract.

Especially if the ....."extension".....goes on for more than a week or so.

ABF might be playing with the proverbial fire here. We are all aware of their problems hiring, due to the last steaming heap of a contract,.....We are all aware of the national shortage of drivers for even higher paying companies,......We are all aware of the tax break for corporations which is giving ABF a 15% windfall in their tax rate,.....permanently, I might add,.....unlike the tax breaks for us common citizens that expire in 7 years....We are all aware of ABF management going on a spending and bonus spree worthy of a drunken sailor after ratification of the last smelly cesspit of a concessionary contract,....and their barely concealed smirks at our falling for their "Woe is Us, Poor Company" routine..........

All of the above considered,.....it would be EXTREMELY STUPID for the ticky-tacky corporate types to try the same tactics a second time around........

It's time for them to realize they are going to have to...PAY......for their trickery last contract.....Time for the company flacks and lawyers to cut the best deal they can, under the circumstances,.........and do it quickly........

ABF admitted last contract,....5 years ago,....that 75% of their employees were within 5 years of retirement.......

If ABF is stupid enough to try and drag out contract talks,.......they may find many of their current employees either speeding up their retirements out of disgust,....or guys quitting and going to better paying companies, whether that being either Union or non-Union companies,........or guys leaving the LTL craft altogether to work for better paying jobs inside of four walls and not behind a wheel.........

They may get a ratified agreement,....and then turn around to realize that they've lost half of their work force due to attrition and disgust............in a excrutiatingly tight Labor market.......(...Advice to ABF management:........WE Ain't in the Twentieth Century Anymore...)( You're Welcome...)

Sometime a College Education can be an Impediment to Clear Thinking,..............

Even if they "lose half of their work force due to attrition and disgust" good ole ArcBest Logistics department will farm out all the business to OD/Estes, etc. By the way, who is going to buy ABF this time? XPO? UPS? Wal-Mart? Amazon? FedEx? Menlo Logistics..my bad, they already took down a Teamster Line... soooo who?

Ahh,.......They may TRY to farm out the business,.......and then they may find that those companies already have their hands full,......and their own problems filling seats.

And,......Farming out our work will just exacerbate the problem.......Why would a shipper with a sales agreement with ABF, be willing to let ABF subcontract to another carrier? Wouldn't it be simpler just to deal with the carrier (..Estes/OD/FedEx..) that ABF is subcontracting to?

Bye-bye freight,....in that case. And,.....our competitors certainly aren't going to put subcontracted ABF freight on the.....Priority....list. Quite the contrary, I think.........

And,....the rumor that ABF will be bought by another company,........once again, right in the middle of contract talks,.........ought to be a good, juicy one,......to really confuse the gullible........

How about American Standard Company.............makers of toilet bowls and tanks?..........They can replace all the road tractor seats with sparkling new toilet bowls,.........thereby cutting down on bathroom breaks by road drivers......

That ought to "speed up" the freight,.........just like a good dose of ExLax........
